DAILY LEADER / MARTY ALBRIGHT / Lawrence County’s Jamie Martin provides a big hit for the Lady Cougars in fifth inning against Bogue Chitto Tuesday night.

BOGUE CHITTO – Lawrence County edged Bogue Chitto 3-1 in high school slow-pitch softball action Tuesday evening. LCHS scored 2 runs in the top of the first, then held on to a narrow lead for the remainder of the night.

With the win, Meleah Howard’s Lady Cougars improved to 2-2 on the young season, and avenged a 5-4 loss to Bogue Chitto three days earlier. The Lady Bobcats, coached by Scott and Denise Leggett, fell to 2-1 on the year.

“This was a good win for us,” said Howard. “I liked our defensive effort, but offensively, we need to pick it up.”

In the first, Lawrence County got a leadoff single from Callie Fortenberry, and RBI hits from Tierra Collins and Jamie Martin, to grab the lead. In the bottom of the second, Bogue Chitto got one-run back. Terrah Nelson singled and eventually scored on a Brooke Myers’ single.

Lawrence County’s Madison Hyde drove home an insurance run for the Lady Cougars in the top of the sixth. Bogue Chitto made several attempts to battle back in the sixth and seventh innings but fell to get the hits needed to rally back.

Tiera Collins, Callie Fortenberry, Karli Bass and Jamie Martin each had 2 hits to lead LCHS. Alexsundria Thomas, Maddux Kirkland and Hyde hit safely.

Lawrence County’s Barri Rogers and Bogue Chitto’s Myers both pitched very well. The only base on balls in the game was intentional.

Mallory Allen, Christian Black, Colby Kirkland, Alana Nettles, Terrah Nelson, Cherie Savoie and Myers led BC’s offense with a single each.

“Our bats were dead tonight,” said BC coach Scott Leggett. “Both teams played great defensively. Now, we must regroup and start getting ready for Thursday contest against Amite County.”

The Lady Cats will visit Liberty Thursday to take on the Amite County Lady Trojans. Lawrence County will host Franklin County. Both contests will start with the junior varsity contest at 5 p.m. and varsity game at 6 p.m.

In junior varsity action, BC defeated Lawrence County 3-1.

Stevie Montgomery tossed the victory for the Lady Cats with no strikeouts and two walks.

Destiny Wallace, Codi Leggett and Lineka Newson paced BC at the plate with a single apiece.
