LCHS football players receive All-State, All-District honors

Lawrence County’s outstanding 2015 football season resulted in numerous football players garnering post-season awards. The Cougars went 13-2 and advanced to the south 4A finals.

Two of the Cougars’ leading players were named to the 4A All-State team. Senior T-Tez Cole made the team as a linebacker, and junior Quitten Brown was honored at the “athlete” position for his all-around play.

Cole was in on a staggering 187 tackles, or about 12.5 per game. He had 28 tackles for loss, two sacks, four fumbles caused and five fumble recoveries. He returned one fumble for a touchdown, and also returned his one pass interception for a touchdown.

Cole played sparingly on offense, but was also a big producer on that side of the ball. He rushed for 644 yards and six touchdowns and caught 16 passes for 260 yards and four touchdowns.

Brown rushed for 2012 yards and 32 touchdowns. He caught 13 passes for 326 yards and four touchdowns. Brown returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, returned a pass interception for a touchdown, and even recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown. In all, Brown scored 40 touchdowns on the season. Brown also recorded 64 tackles on defense, and had three pass interceptions.

St. Stanislaus quarterback Myles Brennan was named 4A offensive player of the year, and Noxubee County defensive end Jeffrey Simmons received the highest defensive honor.

A total of 18 Lawrence County players received All-District 6-4A honors. Quitten Brown was named “Player of the Year” for the District, and T-Tez Cole was named “Defensive Player of the Year.” Cougar coach Jaymie Palmer was named “Coach of the Year” as Lawrence County rolled to the district championship.

Along with Brown and Cole, receiving first team all-district honors were offensive linemen Brandon Armstrong, John Rutland and Blake Williams; quarterback Charl’Tez Nunnery; linebackers Azar Myles and Kemarcus Brown; safety Rykendrick Harness; and defensive end Marcus Kees.

Being named to the second team squad were offensive lineman Corbin Lewis; defensive linemen Oliver Moreman and Will Thurman; defensive backs Mark Rhodes and Kejuan Brown; receivers Marcus Atterberry and A.J. McLaurin; and punter/kicker Josh Stephens.
