Brookhaven sophomore pitcher Katherine Shell was named Most Valuable Player Thursday night during the team’s Fastpitch Softball Awards Banquet. Shell also received All-District recognition.
Ole Brook softball coach Chad Walker welcomed the crowd to the banquet and later delivered the invocation, which was held at the Brookhaven Parks & Recreation Department headquarters located on Highway 51 North. Walker asked Keith Peden to bless the meal.
“We had a successful season overall and this bunch of young girls has really worked hard all season long,” said Walker.
Walker’s team was runner-up in the Region 4-5A race and advanced to the state playoffs. The Lady Panthers lost to Pascagoula in the first round but made a great effort as they defeated the Lady Devils 9-6 in Game One at home before losing two straight on the road. They posted a 8-20 worksheet and were 2-2 in district action.
Prior to presenting the awards, Walker thanked his two assistant coaches, Megan Case and Mandy Vinson, the booster club, parents and friends of the program for their support. “You helped make our team successful.”
Tia Bussey was recognized as the team’s Best Offensive Player. Shortstop Katie Grace Culpepper was named Best Defensive Player. Jadeyn Fuller received the Panther Award, Jada Henderson the Most Improved Award, Fallon Brooks the Hustle Award and Rileigh Allen, Rookie of the Year.
Shell was joined on the All-District team by Bussey, Culpepper and Henderson.
Walker praised his only senior team member, Alycen Speaks, for her years with the team. “You are an excellent student on the field and in the classroom. I wish you the best of luck as you move on,” stated Walker. “You will be missed.”
Speaks was the winner of the scholastic award and also received a gift from the coaches for her senior year.
Prior to the ending of the banquet, the coaches hand out t-shirts to every softball player and manager. The t-shirts were purchased by the softball booster club.
Booster Club officers are David Culpepper, president; Matt Shell, vice president; and Lucy Shell, treasurer.
