BOGUE CHITTO – The Brookhaven Panthers climbed back into the win column Friday night with a 9-1 win over the Bogue Chitto Bobcats in a non-divisional baseball at St. Long Field.

“Glad to get the win,” said Brookhaven coach Randy Spring. “We had a tough battle tonight against a very good Bogue Chitto pitcher Brock Roberts. This was a great turnaround for us from Thursday night’s performance. Overall, I am proud of the guys’ effort. Hopefully, this is confidence builder for us as we prepare for the playoffs.”

The Panthers (16-11, 6-3) resumes action Monday as they prepare to host the Brandon Bulldogs for their final regular season contest before starting their State Playoff march. Brookhaven will also recognize their baseball seniors prior to the varsity contest beginning at 7 p.m. Junior varsity action starts at 5 p.m.

The Bobcats (6-14, 2-4) will be in action Monday as they prepare to their Lincoln County rivals the Enterprise Yellow Jackets. The junior varsity contest starts at 5 p.m., followed the varsity game at 7 p.m.

Brookhaven 9, Bogue Chitto 1 

Brookhaven and Bogue Chitto baseball fans gathered to witness a tough contest between two local Lincoln County teams Friday night.

The Panthers quickly overpowered Bogue Chitto in the first two innings of action as they grabbed a 3-0 lead.

The Bobcats managed to break up Brookhaven’s bid of a shutout in the bottom of the third inning as they cut into Ole Brook’s lead as they pushed across one run but failed to come closer as Brookhaven came a 3-1 advantage.

Ole Brook would increase their lead in the top of the fifth inning as they pushed two more runs to secure a 5-1 lead and later added four more run in the top of the seventh inning.

Scotty Bateman was the winning pitcher for the Panthers with four strikeouts and two walks in five innings of work. Reed Jones came to pitch in relief in the final two innings and collected four strikeouts and no walks.

Brock Roberts suffered the setback on mound for the Bobcats with 10 strikeouts and three walks. Brooks Ingle (0K, 0BB), Nick Parker (0K 2BB) and Bo Smithers (0K, 1BB) pitched one inning each in relief for BC.

“Brookhaven has a very good, well coached team,” said BC coach Russ Carter. “We did not come ready to execute our game plan. Brock Roberts threw a great game for us which helped us stay in the game.”

Myles Tipton was the top slugger on offense for Ole Brook with a double. Hitting safely were Penn Wilson, Brett Spring, Darrian Wilson and Bateman.

Steven Ginn, Tucker Lambert and Ingle recorded the only hits for the Bobcats’ offense with a single each.

In junior varsity action,  the Panthers prevailed 10-7 over the Bobcats.
