Lincoln County Superintendent of Education Terry Brister told school board members Monday a new head football coach has verbally committed to Loyd Star Attendance Center.

Adam Cook will be the new football coach for the upcoming 2014-15 school year at Loyd Star, Brister said, explaining that though Cook has not officially been hired yet, he will be recommended for hire at a later date.

“He has verbally committed to Loyd Star,” Brister said, “and the reason we are wanting to come out in the open with it now is because Adam has stated that he wanted to be a part of spring training.”

Brister said, “He came highly recommended by people that he’s played with, and from people he’s played for and against.”

Brister said Cook has a solid background for the job with certification in health, physical education, mathematics and about nine years’ experience as a teacher and coach. He is currently the coach at Harrison Central High School in Gulfport.

Former Loyd Star football coach Randall Huffman stepped down during last year’s season but has remained on staff at the school.

In another matter, deputy superintendent Letha Presley said the state department has a new mandate concerning the age for entering kindergarten – children must be five years old by Sept. 1.

In other business board members:

• Held the approval of the IDEA budget pending Presley making minor corrections. IDEA, or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, is the policies and procedures outlined by the Mississippi Department of Education for special needs students.

• Approved certified/non-certified recommendations for the 2013-14 school year.

• Gave approval for a family medical leave request.

• Accepted a refund request from child nutrition director Jeremy Berry.

• Approved travel to attend the National Career Academy Coalition Conference.

• Approved the request from Dungan Engineering regarding a quote on the Enterprise softball field grading.

• Accepted the memorandum of understanding with William Carey University for placement of observation of students and student teachers in the Lincoln County School District.

• Approved a request to advertise for dust control, gas and diesel, oil, propane, pest control, waste management, trash bins and lawn care.

• Accepted a kindergarten supply list for the 2014-15 school year.

• Approved a bus turnaround.

• Agreed to the service agreement with Bruckner’s School Photography for Enterprise and Josten’s total service agreement for West Lincoln for the 2014-15 school year.

• Approve a request to use school facilities.
