NATCHEZ – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars were in good position to complete the sweep of the ACCS Rebels until a sixth inning grand slam home run propelled the Rebels to an eventual 9 – 7 victory over the Cougars.
“We were in position to win the game despite too many walks and hit batters. They (ACCS) got two big hits in the sixth inning and that was the difference on the scoreboard,” said BA head coach Casey Edwards after the game. “But, we hit 15 fly balls tonight and that didn’t put any pressure on their defense to make plays; those are just easy outs. We have to get timely hits to be effective.”
A four hit night by Alex Smith led the way for the Cougars. Steven Williams added two base hits including a triple. Landon Nettles had a first inning two-run homer to kick start the Cougar offense. Newt Riley also added a hit to the BA total.
Brandon Ross and Wade Simpson led the ACCS offensive attack with two hits each and both homered in their evening of work. Riley suffered the loss for the Cougars in short relief of Bailey Warren. Simpson picked up the win for the Rebels.
ACCS JV slides past BA
The BA Junior Varsity Cougars led throughout the game but the ACCS Rebels chalked up seven fourth innings runs to overtake the Cougars and pick up the 8 – 5 victory.
The Cougars were led by John Coleman’s two hit night. Lamar Lang, Dylan Winborne, Madison Smith and William King each hit safely adding support.
Cole Gatlin picked up the victory for the Rebels and BA’s Duncan Bane absorbed the loss on the mound in short relief of Taylor Freeny who struck out five in three innings of work.
BA will be back at home to face the Trinity Saints for a Varsity double header Monday night at Harold Williams Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
