TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The second day at the Shelton State Tournament in Tuscaloosa was kinder to the Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves as they won two out of three games after dropping their first two games of the weekend on Friday.
Co-Lin 6, West Georgia Tech 5
The Lady Wolves and Lady Knights had to go to extra innings to finish a game that featured six lead changes.
West Georgia Tech jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st and Co-Lin would get their first run of the game in the second inning when Kaitlin Cooksey made it home after a passed ball.
The Lady Wolves tied the game 3-3 in the third inning when Cooksey scored Breanna McKenzie on an RBI single and Payton Sheffield scored Hannah Roberts on another RBI single.
The game was tied 6-6 after seven innings and the Lady Wolves would win it in the top of the eighth inning. Roberts knocked in Kayla Craft with an RBI single to give Co-Lin the victory.
Sophomore Brooke Gonzales (4-1) garnered the win for Co-Lin after pitching three innings of relief and giving up one hit.
The Lady Wolves had a season high 16 hits in the game. McKenzie led Co-Lin at the plate with two RBIS on three hits. Sheffield was 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Co-Lin 5, Central Alabama 3
There would be no rest for Co-Lin as the Lady Wolves would play another eight inning affair to pick up their second win of the day.
Gonzales (5-1) gained the win for Co-Lin after pitching a season-high eight innings. She gave up nine hits, three earned runs, and had three strikeouts.
Sheffield and Roberts were both 3-for-4 at the plate. Freshman Brooke Laigast had two RBI’s for the Lady Wolves.
It was a triple by Laigast that broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the eighth. Her hit scored Adriene Wallace and Savannah Johnston to give Co-Lin the win.
Co-Lin had 12 hits in the game.
“Brooke pitched really well and went the extra inning to get the win after she had come in relief the game before. We ended the game on a bases loaded double play and beat a really good Central Alabama team,” said Lady Wolves head coach Allen Kent.
Southern Union 5, Co-Lin 0
A season high five errors would prove to be the undoing for Co-Lin as they dropped the final game of the day to the Lady Bison.
Sophomore Meghan Johnson (1-2) took the loss for Co-Lin after giving up five runs (two earned) and four hits in 2.1 innings of work. Freshman Rheagan Welch came in as relief and struck out three and gave up three hits in a solid 4.2 innings pitched.
Two hits from Missy Romero and one from McKenzie would be the only offense the Lady Wolves would be able to muster.
“It was a good weekend against some very good competition and I think it’ll get us ready for our upcoming division play,” said Kent.
Co-Lin (6-5) returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 25 when they host Shelton State for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
