WINONA – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars and Lady Cougars suffered two disappointing setbacks in their quest for a state title Friday night in MAIS State AA tournament action at Winona Christian School.
In the girls’ contest, the Bowling Green Lady Buccaneers dominated the Lady Cougars to secure a 55-16 victory.
In boys’ action, the Simpson Academy Cougars continued to have Brookhaven’s number this season as they thumped the Cougars 56-41.

The defending state champs and No. 1 ranked Bowling Green Lady Buccaneers used a swarming full court defense and a deep bench to totally dominate the BA Lady Cougars en route to a 55-16 victory Friday afternoon in Winona.
The Lady Buccaneers’ win earns them a rematch verses Leake Academy with the AA state title on the line. The Lady Cougars will face Kirk Academy in the consolation game in Saturday’s contest.
Senior guard Madison Warren led the Lady Cougars with seven points on the evening.
Christina Jerrel paced the Lady Bucs with 14 points.

In a battle of Cougars, Simpson and Brookhaven Academy battled for the fourth time this season as both teams gave it their all Friday night to advance to the championship title game.
In the opening quarter, both teams gave their fans plenty to cheer about in a tough defensive match as Simpson managed to claim a 8-6 advantage.
In the second quarter, the Mendenhall-based Cougars finally got their offense clicking and outscored BA 17-10 to take a 25-16 lead into halftime.
In the second half, BA came out on fire and overwhelmed Simpson with a 20-9 run to grab a 36-34 lead after three quarters of action.
In the fourth quarter, Simpson charged back with extreme force and clobbered BA with a 22-5 run to take the win.
Senior guard Zac Smith was the offensive leader for the BA Cougars with 14 points and three rebounds. Peyton Hoods contributed 13 points and led on the boards with six rebounds.
Simpson had four players to score in double figures as senior guard Jake Brown led the charge with a game-high 20 points. Peyton Sullivan continued the scoring onslaught with 11 points. Daniel Taylor and Mason Herrin provided 10 points apiece. Herrin powered Simpson on the boards with eight rebounds. Taylor helped with seven rebounds.
