MOBILE. Ala – The Southwest Bears split a doubleheader with Wallace-Selma Community College Monday in Mobile, winning the opener 3-1 and falling 15-9 in the nightcap.

With the split, the Bears now stand 2-2 on the young season.

Southwest 3, Wallace-Selma 1 

Southwest took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener when Kendric Hodges led off with a single and scored on a line-drive double to centerfield off the bat of Payden Lynch.

The lead went to 3-0 in the fourth inning. Lynch led off with his second double, moved to third when Patric Devlin reached base on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball. Moving to second when Lynch scored, Devlin advanced to third on a Tyler Towle’s groundout and later scored on another passed ball.

Wallace-Selma scored their only run of the game in the sixth inning when Reise Bell led off with a single to right and reached home when Tyler Evans grounded out to second.

Shane McKinley (1-1) went three innings on the mound to pick up the win for Southwest. He surrendered three hits while striking out two and issuing one walk. Cliff Hurst pitched the next three innings before giving way to Brady Badon. Badon pitched a perfect seventh inning to record his second save of the season. Collin Carroll, Anthony Durr and Towles all singled for the Bears.

Wallace-Selma 15, Southwest 9 

Trailing 6-1 in game two, the Bears picked up five runs in the third to knot the score at 6-6. Carroll, Lynch and Trent Gordy all drove in a run with a base hit while ground outs by Hodges and Devlin accounted for the other two.

The Bears took an 8-7 lead in the fifth inning when Lynch was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a Gordy single and scored on Devlin’s ground out to first. Gordy reached home on a Zach Jones double to left.

Wallace-Selma answered with four runs in the half of the fifth to take an 11-8 lead. The Bears picked one run back up in the sixth when Carroll hit a one-out double to center, his third hit of the game, stole third and scored on a Hodges fly out. That was as close as the Bears would get as Wallace-Selma answered with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Jesse Travis pitched three innings in taking the loss on the mound for the Bears. Chase Ladd and J. D. Stockstill also pitched.

Austin Knight and Logan Ferrell both had two singles in the game while Durr and Hodges also hit safely.

Southwest is set to return to the diamond on Saturday when they host the Kaskaskia (Ill) Blue Devils. Game one of the twinbill is set for 1:00.
