Bears knock off Bassfield; girls fall

BASSFIELD – The West Lincoln Bears managed to stay undefeated in the boys Region 7-2A race after knocking off the Bassfield Yellowjackets 74-61 in basketball action Monday night.

In the girls game, the Bassfield Lady Yellowjackets secured a big 52-41 win over the Lady Bears.

West Lincoln and Bassfield were originally scheduled to play today, but elected to play yesterday to beat the Winter Advisory Alert.

West Lincoln returns to action Friday, as they prepare to visit the Loyd Star Hornets to play four games. The Hornets are West Lincoln’s Region rivals. The junior varsity girls will start the action at 4 p.m., followed by the junior varsity boys at 5 p.m.

The varsity contest is set to start with the girls game at 6. The boys will follow at 7:30 p.m.

Bassfield 52, West Lincoln 41 

The Lady Yellowjackets bounced back to tie the series with the Lady Bears at home with a second half 30-19 explosion.

At halftime, both teams went into the locker room tied at 22-all.

Senior forward Destiny Allen was the offensive and defensive leader for the Lady Bears (6-16, 3-3) with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Karley Smith was the second leading scorer with 9 points. Heather Moak and Smith also helped on the boards with 9 rebounds apiece.

The Lady Yellowjackets had two players to score in double figures as Nicole Maye lead the pace with 16 points. Malexus Loftin contributed 14 points.

West Lincoln 74, Bassfield 61 

The Bears (19-4, 6-0) came out strong in the first halftime and hammered the Yellowjackets to take a 41-24 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Bassfield fought hard to rally back but could not control West Lincoln’s high-octane offense as the Bears rolled to preserve the victory.

Junior guard Duane Marshall pumped in a game-high 32 points to lead the Bears. Senior center Sam Bivens chipped in with 19 points and was the leader in the paint with 12 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.

Bassfield had three players to score in double figures as Jamal Peters was the offensive leader with a team-high 24 points. Jonathan Holloway and Josh Williams contributed 11 points apiece.
