MONTICELLO – No charges have been filed in connection with the Sunday afternoon shooting of a Monticello man, said Lawrence County Sheriff Joel Thames.

However, the sheriff’s department will present information from the shooting to the grand jury.

David Howell, 50, was shot three times at approximately 2:15 p.m. Sunday and was later airlifted to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. He is in stable condition, according to Thames.

“It appears that he will be all right,” Thames said earlier this week.

The sheriff said Howell was shot after going to the home of Jerry Darrell King, 40. The two men had a long-standing disagreement, according to the sheriff, who said King’s girlfriend, who was present, called 911.

King, 40, who allegedly fired the shots in the incident, has not been charged in the incident because the shooting appears to be justified under the castle doctrine, Thames said.

The castle doctrine, which was adopted into law by Mississippi in 2006, allows people to defend themselves in their homes, workplaces or vehicles.
