TYLERTOWN – The Wesson Lady Cobras kicked off the new year with a tough loss, falling to the Salem Lady Wildcats 61-52 Friday afternoon in Dexter’s Holiday Tournament.

In other girls’ tournament action, the West Lincoln Lady Bears defeated the Dexter Lady Bulldogs 46-33, and in the nightcap, the South Pike Lady Eagles edged the West Marion Lady Trojans 54-53.

The Lady Cobras (5-8) return to action Tuesday at they prepare to host the West Lincoln Lady Bears for a non-divisional contest, starting at 6 p.m.

Salem 61, Wesson 52 

The Lady Cobras and Lady Wildcats provided a tough defensive battle for their basketball fans as both teams fought hard in a see-saw contest in which the scored was tied at 12-all after one quarter of action.

In the second quarter, Wesson and Salem continued their strong defensive battle, but the Lady Wildcats managed to secure a slim 29-28 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Cobras charged back and outscored Salem 16-15 to tie the game at 44-all after three quarters of action.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Wildcats managed to wear down Wesson in the closing minutes and thumped the Lady Cobras 17-8 in the final frame to secure the win.

Sophomore forward Jashia Smith was the top scorer for the Lady Cobras with 17 points. Senior guard Brandi McInnis contributed 15 points.

“We played sluggishly defensively,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “We had our opportunities to secure the win, but we missed too many free throws throughout the game that could have given us the win. Overall, the girls played hard until the very end. We still have got to get better as we get ready for our district run.”

The Lady Wildcats (10-3, 1-0) had four players to score in double figures as Jamine May led the charge with 17 points. Ariel Fortenberry chipped in with 15 points. Markeria Butler and Alandra Coleman provided 12 points apiece.

“Glad to get the win,” said Salem coach Brian Smith. “The girls did a great job fighting hard in this tough defensive battle. Overall, I was very pleased with their effort.”
