Bogue Chitto splits with Loyd Star

The Loyd Star Hornets and the Bogue Chitto Lady Cats captured wins in a Lincoln County showdown Tuesday night in Loyd Star Gymnasium.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Cats managed to overpower the Lady Hornets to secure a 56-40 victory.
In boys’ action, the Hornets thumped the Bobcats 80-39.
Loyd Star returns to action Thursday on the road, to battle the St. Andrew’s Saints for four games. The junior high games begin at 4 and 5 p.m. The varsity girls tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.
Bogue Chitto resumes action Thursday as they prepare to open their new gym and host McLaurin. Tipoff is set for the girls’ game at 6 p.m., followed by the boys.
B. Chitto 56, L. Star 40
The Lady Cats (3-2) came out strong and applied aggressive pressure on the Lady Hornets (2-2) to secure the lead and the win.
Senior guard Mattie Avants pumped in a game-high 15 points and four rebounds to lead the Lady Cats. Christian Black chipped in with 13 points and was the leader on the boards with five rebounds. Earlnesheia Dillion contributed 11 points.
“This was a good win for us on the road,” said BC coach Christi Terrell. “Defensively, we played a lot better. Our shot selection were falling for us in the second quarter and second half. We still have a lot of things to keep working on to work out all the kinks.”
Sophomore Hanna Dickerson was the top scorer for the Lady Hornets with 14 points. Marcie Givens netted 10 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Jordan Shelby directed the Lady Hornets on the boards with seven rebounds.
“Bogue Chitto came ready to play and we struggle to match their intensity,” said Loyd Star coach Gene ‘Moochie’ Britt. “We did not shoot the ball really well and got into early foul trouble against a good team. Overall, our effort was good, but we need to continue improving.”
L. Star 80, B. Chitto 39
The Loyd Star Hornets and the Bogue Chitto Bobcats battled in a close 18-10 contest in the first quarter before the Hornets turned up the heat in the second quarter and outscored the Bobcats 22-10 to take a 40-20 lead into halftime.
Junior forward Edrick Alsworth poured in a game-high double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead four players in double figures for Loyd Star (3-0). Caleb Yarborough also provided a double-double of 11 points and 10 steals. Javion Beard and Levi Redd had 10 points apiece.
“We played very good team ball,” said Britt. “We had very balanced scoring for everyone and I was pleased to give everybody some playing time.”
Dennis Rogers and Damien Terrell were the offensive leaders for the Bobcats (1-4) with eight points apiece. Jeremiah Perkins directed Bogue Chitto on the boards with seven rebounds.
“We just got out hustled,” said BC new boys coach Marcus Pitts. “Loyd Star has a very good team. Our guys are steadily improving in practice and games, we are also pleased to have our players returning from football. This is a learning experience for us, but we will get better.”
In junior high action, the Loyd Star boys and Bogue Chitto girls secured victories.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Cats defeated the Lady Hornets 18-13. Chyna Collins and Lineka Newson paced BC with eight points each. Katie West led the Lady Hornets with seven points.
In boys’ action, Loyd Star knocked off Bogue Chitto 38-30. Cade Hodges was the top scorer for the Hornets with 15 points. Dane Gregory Smith netted 10 points.
Malik Richardson directed the Bobcats with 12 points.
