The West Lincoln Bears and Lady Bears swept their basketball games with the Wesson Cobras and Lady Cobras Tuesday night in Jack Case Gymnasium.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Bears outscored the Lady Cobras in the final frame to claim their first win of the season with a 39-32 victory. In boys’ action, the Bears managed to knock off the Cobras 79-66 in an offensive show.

West Lincoln resumes action Thursday, when they will host their Lincoln County rivals the Bogue Chitto Bobcats for four games. Junior High action tips off at 4 and 5 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

Wesson returns home to prepare for their home opener and will welcome the Magee Trojans to the Snake Pit Friday night for three games. The junior varsity girls kick off at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity games at 6 and 7:30 p.m.

West Lincoln 39, Wesson 32 

The Lady Bears and Lady Cobras provided a great defensive battle for the basketball fans as both teams struggled to get their offense going. West Lincoln managed to get the upper hand and secured a 10-5 lead at the end of the first quarter to hold a 17-11 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Wesson outscored West Lincoln 11-4 in the third frame to take a 22-21 lead after three quarters of action. In the fourth quarter, West Lincoln bounced back to overpower the Lady Cobras 18-10 to claim the victory.

Layton Sills was the top scorer for the Lady Bears (1-1) with 10 points and four assists. Heather Moak ruled the backboards for West Lincoln, collecting 10 rebounds and had nine points.

“We struggled to get things going offensively,” said West Lincoln coach Lane Young. “In the fourth quarter, we managed to put together a run by hitting a couple of easy shots and held on for the win.”

Sophomore forward Jashia Smith was the offensive leader for the Lady Cobras (1-1) with 11 points and eight rebounds. Brandi McInnis contributed 10 points and five steals.

“We did not play well,” said Wesson coach Rusty Newman. “We shot very poorly from the field and at the free thrown line. Overall we played very sluggishly and we need to play better.”

West Lincoln 79, Wesson 66 

In a matchup between two high-powered offenses, the Bears and Cobras provided their basketball fans with offensive show. West Lincoln came out and took control early to grab a 18-12 lead after one quarter of action and held on to a 38-29 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the offensive fireworks continued as the Bears (2-0) managed to defend against Wesson’s attempts to rally and claimed the victory.

Senior forward Sid Griffin led four West Lincoln players in double figures with 20 points. Duane Marshall pumped in a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Bivens contributed 14 points and six rebounds. Ronnie Edwards had 12 points.

“Wesson took it to us,” said Young. “We need to play a lot better and be unselfish as a team.”

Sophomore guard Anthony Jones netted a game-high 30 points to lead the Cobras (1-1). Marquis Lofton helped with 13 points. Farrod Green was the top rebounder for Wesson with nine rebounds.

“The guys played hard,” said Newman. “We just could not capitalize on our opportunities that we had to get the win. Overall, I am proud of my guys’ effort. We just need to learn to put it all together.”

In junior high action, West Lincoln claimed two victories over Wesson.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Bears surpassed the Lady Cobras 32-23. Jana Case paced West Lincoln with 18 points. McKenzie Pyles contributed seven points.

Alaisha Mims direct Wesson with eight points. Monique Brown chipped in seven points.

In boys’ action, the Bears cruised past the Cobras 56-25. Landon Lynch powered West Lincoln’s offense with 14 points. Adam Martinez provided 12 points and Donterrius Taylor had 10 points.

Brian Thomas was the top score for the Cobras with 12 points.
