The West Jones Mustangs overcame a sluggish start to spoil Brookhaven’s homecoming with a 38-26 offensive shootout victory over the Panthers Friday night in Region 3-5 football action on King Field.

West Jones coach Scott Pierson returned to the gridiron Friday after suffering a stroke Tuesday. He stated “This was a emotional game for our team, but the guys fought hard and made the plays in the second half to earn the win.

“Brookhaven has a very good team,” continued Pierson. “They are a lot better than it shows on record. They just had a tough three weeks.

“Overall, we need to continue getting better,” stated Pierson. “We limit our turnovers and get better offensively and defensively.”

In the first quarter, the Mustangs (5-1, 3-0) came out strong in their opening drive and worked down the field before Ole Brook’s defense managed to shut the door on their drive to force West Jones’s kicker Kyle Estes to nailed a 40-yard field goal with 9:38 remaining.

Brookhaven (4-3, 0-3) managed to their offense going in the second quarter, when senior quarterback Fred Trevillion plowed through for a four-yard touchdown run with 9:14 remaining.

Ole Brook continued to charge up the 2013 homecoming crowd with huge defensive stops on the Mustangs.

The Panthers offense feed out the crowds hype and marched the field for another touchdown. Trevillion finished the drive with a seven-yard run to paydirt with 2:15 remaining. At the end of the first half, Ole Brook led 14-3 over West Jones.

In the second half, the Mustangs came out of the locker room a change team and rifle off 35 points and held the Panthers to just 12 points.

Ole Brook and West Jones traded blows in the third quarter as both teams punched in two touchdowns apiece.

The Mustangs senior wide receiver Matt Ishee started the scoring spree with a 24-yard touchdown run with 8:39 remaining. Brookhaven quickly answered on the next play with a 50-yard sprint from senior Shuntez Smith at the 8:19 mark.

Senior running back DJ Sanders help powered West Jones back with a 19-yard blast to paydirt with 6:23 remaining. The Panthers answered the Mustangs’ challenge again with a long drive and Trevillion punched in Ole Brook’s final touchdown on a one-yard quarterback sneak with 1:34 left. After three quarters of action, Brookhaven secured a 26-17 lead over West Jones.

In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs went on a scoring onslaught to overpowered the Panthers with 21-point blast.

Junior quarterback Neil McLaurin sparked West Jones charge with touchdown drive of a 13-yard touchdown with 9:39 remaining and a 12-yard scramble with 6:37 left to reclaimed a slim 31-26 lead over Ole Brook.

The Panthers fought hard to answered the Mustangs challenge, but after a few plays later West Jones’ sophomore defensive line backer Brandon Young scoop up a Ole Brook fumble and returned it 40 yards to paydirt with 5:04 left

Brookhaven, refusing to give up, continued to battle hard to rally back but came up short at the end.

“We need to learn to play all four quarter to be a good football team,” said BHS coach Tommy Clopton. “We need to learn to execute on both sides of the ball. For us to beat good teams, we got to quit being our worst enemy.”

Offensively, Fred Trevillion paced the Panthers attack, completing eight-of-19 passes for 131 yards. He also rushed for 18 yards on 12 carries and three touchdowns.

Tre McDaniel was the leader on the ground with 92 yards rushing on 25 carries. Ken Boyd rushed for 50 yards and had two catches for 26 yards.

Javonte Trevillion caught two passes for 21 yards.

McLaurin was the offensive leader for the Mustangs, completing seven-of-12 passes for 65 yards and rushed for 76 yards on 12 carries.

Defensively, Kardale Clark and Chris Calcote were the top hitters for Ole Brook with five tackles apiece. Leo Lewis, Ty Hill and Darious O’Quinn contributed four stops each. Marquez Gibson and Willie Bates recovered a fumble apiece.

Ole Brook invades Ellisville to tangle with the South Jones Braves (1-6, 0-3) next Friday. West Jones returns home to host the Wingfield Falcons (3-5, 1-2). Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
