A Saturday night altercation has left one area man in critical condition from a gunshot wound to the head.
Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing said Gary Knepp, 41, of McCall Creek, appears to have caused a disturbance at the home of David Chisholm Jr., 35, on Estes Trail Saturday just before 7:30 p.m.
Chisholm’s wife is Knepp’s ex-wife.
Statements from witnesses say Chisholm was at home with his wife and children when Knepp barged into the house. The disturbance moved into the yard, at which point Knepp went back to his truck, according to statements.
Knepp then moved toward Chisholm’s wife, witnesses said. Rushing said Chisholm’s statement indicated he feared for his wife’s life because he was unsure why Knepp went to his truck. Chisholm shot Knepp once.
The sheriff’s department received the call to the residence at 7:30 p.m.
King’s Daughters Medical Center responded for medical care. Knepp was then transported by flight to University Medical Center.
As of Tuesday morning, Knepp is in stable but critical condition.
Rushing said based on statements gathered, no charges have been filed. The information will be presented to the grand jury, and ultimately they will decide whether Chisholm will be charged.
Rushing said the Castle Doctrine could protect Chisholm from charges.
