Officials tout construction activity

Area building activity appears to be picking up as summertemperatures rise.

Two new businesses are currently under construction inBrookhaven, and a third is in the works, officials said.

Building Inspector Walter Temple said he has issued buildingpermits for Wendy’s on Brookway Boulevard and CNS Cycles, a HondaMotorcycle and all-terrain vehicle dealership. CNS Cycles, owned byLinda Covington, will be located near the Home Depot, Templesaid.

Temple said Empire Truck Sales has submitted plans to build adealership near the Home Depot. However, the plans are just aproposal at this point, Temple said.

Additionally, new residential construction is currently beingerected, he said.

The activity is good news for the area. Chamber of CommerceExecutive Director Cliff Brumfield said the construction activitypoints toward Brookhaven’s economic progress.

“Our recent increase in commercial construction in Brookhaven isa good indication of the confidence businesses have in ourcommunity and our area’s future,” Brumfield said. “These newdevelopments will bring enhancements to our sales tax revenue andprovide aesthetic improvements, such as landscaping, to our retailthoroughfare along the boulevard and I-55.”

Brumfield said the current construction activity is typical forthis time of year and is comparable to the amount of constructionundertaken in recent years.

Brumfield said examples of construction and renovation projectsover the last 18 months include Sherwin Williams, Bobby Britt StateFarm Insurance, Betsy Smith Properties, O’Reilly Auto Parts, HomeDepot and residential construction.

King’s Daughters Medical Center is also pursuing a multi-milliondollar expansion project, Brumfield said. First United MethodistChurch is building a new activities center on South JacksonStreet.

“This construction and these renovations add to the quality oflife Brookhaven residents enjoy,” Brumfield said.
