Merchant, Underwood named to all-star squad

Offensive tackle Stone Underwood and defensive lineman JawaunMerchant of Brookhaven have been named to the Mississippi squad forthe 24th Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Football Classic The gamewill be played Dec. 11, in Ladd-Peebles Memorial Stadium in Mobile,Ala.
The Mississippi team will be under the direction of Louisville headcoach M.C. Miller who coached several years at NoxubeeCounty.
Ole Brook head coach Tucker Peavey said he was pleased to have twoplayers representing BHS in the Classic. “It’s a great honor forthose guys. You nominate them for the team. Then the (all-star)coaches have to look at them on film and make theirevaluations.”
Underwood (6-3, 270) wears jersey No. 79 and plays left tackle forthe Panthers. He participated in several summer camps and sparkedrecruiting interest from numerous colleges.
Merchant (5-11, 273), an anchor in Brook’s defensive line, isrecognized for his fierce pass rush and strength in thetrenches.
Quarterbacks Ben Stevens (6-0, 175) of West Jones and JaquezJohnson (6-1, 215) of Starkville were selected to directMississippi’s offense. Both are mobile athletes with strongarms.
Wilkinson County placed two players on the squad: offensive linemanJames Malden (6-4, 275) and wide receiver Devin Fosselman (5-10,180).
