Loyd Star athletes honored

Loyd Star’s faculty, coaches and family honored the Hornet athletes with a banquet to honor the football, girls basketball, boys basketball, girls soccer, boys soccer, golf, baseball, cheerleader, softball and tennis teams Wednesday night.

Loyd Star principal Mrs. Robin Case opened the ceremony welcoming the large crowd to the banquet that was held at the Lincoln County Civic Center.

After the meal, coaches recognized their team’s achievements during the year and players were given awards for their hard work.

Branden Canny received the Most Valuable Player award in football. Seth Farmer won the overall Most Valuable Player award in boys soccer. Brendyn Brister received honors for setting a school record for the most Defensive Plays in boys soccer.

Dawn McDaniel received the Most Valuable award in girls’ soccer. Will Lee secured the boys MVP in golf.

Marcey Givens was honored as the Most Outstanding Player and Best Offensive Player in girls basketball. Ruby McCullough and Jordan Shelby received the Best Defensive Player honors in girls’ basketball.

Terion Williams received the Most Valuable Player and Best Rebounder honors in boys basketball.

Donovan Johnson and Latrealle Smith collected the Best Defensive Player award in boys’ basketball.

Caleb Yarborough and Logan Smith were selected as the Most Outstanding Players in baseball. Cori Crowe and Yarborough shared the Most Outstanding Pitcher Award in baseball. Hannah Smith was honored with the Most Valuable Player award in softball. Abigail Thornton won the Golden Glove award in softball.

Natalie Smith aced the Most Valuable girls singles. Connor Crosby netted the Most Valuable boys. Faith Bergeron and Caylee Grace Yarborough received the Most Valuable team doubles award.

Before the end of the ceremony, Hornets’ Athletic Director Billy Vaughn presented two special awards. He recognized two seniors with the Scholar-Athlete Award: Natalie Smith and Brendyn Brister. Coach Vaughn also made an emotional announcement that he was stepping down as the head coach of the girls basketball team, but will remain as the Athletic Director for Loyd Star sports.

Mrs. Case closed the ceremony, thanking the athletes, coaches and families for all of their hard work and accomplishments in another wonderful season at Loyd Star.
