Brook 13s take title at Summit

SUMMIT — The Brookhaven all-stars whipped Summit 17-9 Tuesdaynight at the Windsor Gay Youth Sports Complex, securing the DixieBoys 13s District Tournament championship. Brookhaven advances tothe state tournament which begins July 22, at Laurel.
“We hit the ball real well and our pitching was good, too,” saidBrookhaven manager Dale Lowery.
On the mound, Matt Smith pitched the victory. In 5 innings,Smith fanned 4 batters, walked 4 and gave up 7 runs on 8 hits.
Travis Sorrels replaced Smith and hurled the final 2 frames. Hefanned 3 batters, no walks, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits.
Brookhaven’s 14-year-old all-stars won the district titleTuesday night, beating Natchez 3-0 at Exchange Club Park’s LegionField. The 14s state tournament will be held at Taylorsville.
Brookhaven was led by third baseman Brandon Allen and Sorrelswho singled twice and tripled. Smith collected 3 doubles. Gib Brittsingled twice. Grant Burk doubled and singled. Gage Wilson andTyler Lumley singled.
Serving as courtesy runners were Cameron Berry and CadeMcCullough. Berry scored 2 runs and McCullough scored once.
Kyle Cross and Calvin Robinson provided run-scoring sacrificesfor Brookhaven.
Summit’s Jacob McCarty aborbed the setback. In 5 innings, Hefanned 6 batters, walked 5 and gave up 13 runs and 12 hits.,
Josh King pitched the final 2 frames. He fanned 1 batter andwalked 5, allowing 4 runs on 3 hits.
McCarty hit a 2-run homer for Summit in the third inning. Theclout gave Summit a 4-2 lead. McCarty went 3-for-4.
Summit’s Wesley Sherrer went 2-for-4.
In the fourth inning, Brookhaven exploded for 8 runs on 6 hits.Sorrels tripled during the rally while Burk and Smith doubled asBrook took a 10-4 lead.
Brook added 3 more runs in the fifth and plated 4 in theseventh.
