Robert Edmondson “Bob” Jones, well-known in Brookhaven as anattorney, historian, actor, author, sportsman and story teller,died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003, after a battle with cancer.

Services are 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 17, at First United MethodistChurch with burial in Riverwood Memorial Park. Visitation is Sundayfrom 5-8 p.m., at Brookhaven Funeral Home.

Jones, born on Feb. 13, 1929, was a lifelong resident ofBrookhaven. He graduated from Brookhaven High School in 1947. Heearned his Bachelor of Business Administration and Law degrees fromUniversity of Mississippi. During college, he was a member of SigmaNu fraternity, lettered as a member of the golf team, and served aspresident of law school class.

After college, he was an officer in the Judge Advocate GeneralCorps in the Army, where he served from 1952-1956.

In 1956, Jones returned to Brookhaven to practice law and toengage in oil and gas drilling and investments. He was involved innumerous community and business activities. He served as presidentof the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, chairman ofthe Industrial Development Foundation, president of Kiwanis Cluband King of the Krewe of Ceres Harvest Ball. He was a member of theboard of directors of Brookhaven Bank and Trust, board of directorsof Lincoln County Cancer Crusade, Mississippi Bar Association,Mississippi Petroleum Landman’s Association, American PetroleumLandman’s Association, Mississippi State Welfare Board, LincolnCounty Republican Executive Committee and Brookhaven Country Clubboard.

Jones was an Eagle Scout and one of the founding members of theBrookhaven Little Theatre. His most recent accomplishment was thepublication of his book, “Mississippi Gumbo,” a collection ofhistorical writings, plays, anecdotes and observations. He was aregular columnist for The DAILY LEADER.

As a member of First United Methodist Church, he participated asa choir member, Sunday School teacher and chairman of theadministrative board and board of trustees.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Judge and Mrs. RobertLee Jones.

Survivors are his wife of 49 years, the former Betsy Woodham ofDothan, Ala.; his children, Robert Edmondson Jones Jr., ofBrookhaven, Dr. Jennifer Jones Wright of Tuscaloosa, Ala., andElizabeth Butterfield Jones of Aspen, Colo.; his sister, ElizabethBlanke of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; his grandchildren, Robert LeeJones II, Robert Edmondson Wright and Sarah Price Wright; and hisuncle, Sam P. Jones.
