Muscle cars, hotrods, perfected originals – fast and exquisiteantique cars of all variety will be rolling into Brookhaven thisweekend for the Ole Brook Cruisers’ “Goin’ to Town Car Show.”

Cruisers member Tommy Smith said more than 100 cars ofyesteryear from all over the Southeastern U.S. will line up in thecity parking lot on Railroad Avenue Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3p.m. so their owners can see, be seen, chow down on concessions andraise money for charity.

Any Brookhavenites with spare change might even be able to leavethe event with the car of their dreams, as some – if not all – thecars at the show will be for sale.

“Just because it doesn’t have a sign on it doesn’t mean it can’tbe bought,” Smith said. “Everything is for sale. Some of them willbe in primer; some will be $80,000 automobiles.”

Smith said the car show would feature games and activities,music, trivia and plenty of door prizes. The Ole Brook Cruiserswill award trophies to their Sweet 16 favorite cars, and the show’sparticipants will pick a Top 10 among themselves.

An advertising opportunity exists for local businesses, whichwill be able to sponsor their own favorite displays with plaques.Awards ceremonies begin at 3 p.m.

The car show will also benefit local charities. The ChristianMotorcycle Association will handle vending, and all proceeds fromfood sales will be used to fund the organization’s Run for the Sun,in which bicycles and other means of light transportation will bepurchased and donated to Christian missionaries.

The Ole Brook Cruisers will use registration fees fromparticipants to fund a variety of local charitable causes.

“We wait until something comes up,” Smith said. “If somebody’shouse burns down, there’s a bad storm … if somebody in thecommunity needs help, we’ll help them.”

Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce Executive VicePresident Cliff Brumfield expects the fun and games at the car showto spill over into other parts of Brookhaven. With car clubsdriving into Brookhaven from Alabama, Arkansas and even Florida, heis hoping to see more than 1,000 people shuffle through the citythis weekend.

“This event will bring others from outside Brookhaven into ourcommunity and allow us the opportunity to showcase our downtownarea,” Brumfield said. “Car people are like anyone else – they comefrom all walks of life. They should enjoy taking advantage of ourmany different retail venues in Brookhaven.”

Brumfield said the car show’s atmosphere will be family friendlyand, weather permitting, should be a “tremendous success.”

“Participants will be amazed at the quality of restoration ofmany of the cars on display,” he said. “The Ole Brook Cruisersalways do an outstanding job of putting together their events.”

Saturday’s show marks the first time the display moves todowntown. The show was formerly held at car dealerships on BrookwayBoulevard, but Smith said using the city parking lot would requireless preparation and make the show easier on all participants.
