A relaxing lunch and fun are at the heart of the Jazz and JavaAt Noon program Tuesday in Railroad Park.
“It’s just a lunchtime entertainment social,” said Sheila Porch, chairperson for public relations for the Brookhaven-Lincoln CountyChamber of Commerce’s Retirement Committee and an event organizer.”You can bring a lunch, a lawn chair or a blanket and just enjoythe music, the people and the free coffee.”
A variety of free coffee blends will be served in the oldcabin.
“It’s a good central point being downtown. Everyone knows wherethe log cabin is, and Railroad Park is just ideal for this,” Porchsaid.
The event will last approximately an hour and is the first ofseveral events planned by the retirement committee for later thisyear. Charlie Evans and The Dixie Land Jazz will provide theentertainment.
Although the event is organized and sponsored by the retirementcommittee, Porch said it is open to all ages.
Aside from the social and entertainment value of the event,Porch said the chamber hopes to identify those new to thecommunity.
“We’re trying to find out who is new to Brookhaven and connectthem with the community,” she said. “We care. We just want to knowwho they are. I’ve talked to a lot of new people to Brookhaven andthey want to meet other people who are new.”
Registration forms will be scattered throughout Railroad Parkfor the city’s newest residents to sign. Porch said the names willhelp the newest residents identify each other while providing alist of names the chamber can contact to provide information aboutBrookhaven and Lincoln County, such as services, charitableorganizations and programs available.
“We want to get community involvement with these newcomers andlet them know they’re important to Brookhaven,” Porch said.
