Wolves capture two over East Central

DECATUR – Sophomore Kiara Etienne scored a game-high 22 pointsto lead the No. 8 ranked Lady Wolves to a 84-59 South Division winover the East Central Lady Warriors.
Co-Lin improves to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the South Division. TheLady Warriors fall to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the division.
Co-Lin took a 46-26 lead into the dressing room at the half.
The Lady Wolves, who average 4 three-pointers a game, made 9 treysfor the game, 6 by Etienne. They out-rebounded the Lady Warriors40-34.
Gee Gee Williams pumped in 14 points for the Lady Wolves. BrandiSimmons posted a double-double with 10 points and 11rebounds.
“We had a 90-second run right before half, when we pushed afive-point lead to 20 and that was the key to the game,” saidCo-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young. “We shot the ball really welltonight, but our defense still needs to improve before we playJones on Monday night.”
For East Central, Deidra Hawkins scored 12 points and Bianca Thomas11.
In the men’s action, the Wolves held on for a 64-60 South Divisionwin over the East Central Warriors. Co-Lin improves to 6-7 overalland 2-2 in the South Division. East Central falls to 8-6 and 3-2 inthe division.
After trailing 37-31 at halftime, the Wolfpack took their firstlead of the second half at 47-46 with 10:11 remaining. Co-Lin builta 9-point lead and looked to be cruising to a win, but missed somekey free throws in the final minutes of the game. The Warriorspulled to within 3 points with 50.6 seconds left in the game on aKenneth Barlow 3-pointer.
With 28.1 seconds left, Marcus Hooten went 2-for-2 from the freethrow line to give the Wolves a 64-60 lead. East Central’s CurtisLoving launched a 3-pointer that bounced off the rim.
Co-Lin’s Antonio Holmes was fouled with 15 seconds left in thegame, but missed both free throws. A desperation 3-pointer by GlennThomas, a Loyd Star grad, fell short.
Hooten led Co-Lin with a game-high 27 points. Jamaal McCoy posted adouble-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Freshman Jake Reidhad his best game of the season scoring 13 points.
“I’m very proud of the way our guys battled back when they weredown six at half and having trouble scoring the ball,” said Co-Linmen’s coach Dennis Sims. “We made some defensive adjustments in thesecond half and held them to 23-points for the half.”
East Central had four players in double figures. Barlow led the waywith 19 points and 11 rebounds. Bilal Kelley chipped in 11 points,Loving and Keondre’ Hodges added 10 points apiece.
Co-Lin hosts Jones County on Monday for another key South Divisiongame. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. for the Lady Wolves with the men’sgame to follow.
