The Wesson Cobras used a strong running attack to completelyoverpower the host Enterprise Fighting Yellow Jackets 47-7 Fridaynight to open the 2006 football campaign. The Cobras picked up 325ground yards on 37 carries.

Wesson moved to 1-0 on the young season (0-0 in Region 6-2A)while Enterprise fell to 0-1 (0-0 in Region 4-1A).

“Our guys played well, ” said Wesson head coach Tommy Clopton.”Bu we still have some things to work on. Everyone’s goal is astate championship, but you have to start with the first game.”

Wesson took a 20-0 lead after the first quarter. Seniorquarterback Micah Davis scored the first two of his threetouchdowns on the night on runs of six and 45 yards at the 7:43 and3:32 marks, respectively. Kyle Kearney added the first two of histhree PATs on the night.

After an Enterprise miscue on the kickoff following Davis’second TD, the Cobras regained the ball on the Jackets’ six yardline and wasted no time cashing in. Otho Smith scrambled for ascore with 3:27 to play in the opening stanza.

The Cobras went up 27-0 with 8:35 to play in the second quarteras Roy Williams scored on a one-yard dive. Kearney added his finalPAT.

The next Wesson touchdown came with 4:24 to play in the half.John Craft carried the ball seven yards into the end zone. ChrisFink kicked the extra point.

Wesson scored its final touchdown of the first half with 0:45 toplay on a 10-yard run by Ralph Brothern. The failed PAT left thescore at 40-0 at the intermission.

The Cobras took the second half kickoff and wasted little timein scoring the only points of the third quarter. Davis reachedpaydirt with 8:51 to play on a five-yard run. Fink’s PAT kick putthe score at 47-0.

Enterprise avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter when seniorquarterback Rodney Barker scored on a 14-yard dash with 1:03 leftin the game. Elliott McKee kicked the extra point.

“Defensively, we did a poor job of containment and stopping thedive,” said Jackets’ assistant coach Seth Lofton. “We did somethings well offensively, but we always had the long field whilethey (Wesson) had the short field.”

Jamar Sims led the Cobras’ ground game with 79 yards on fourcarries. Williams picked up 66 yards and a touchdown on eightcarries. Davis toted the ball three times for 56 yards and threescores while Craft picked up 31 yards and a touchdown on sixcarries.

Davis completed two of four passes for 27 yards. Brothern hadone catch for 16 yards while Smith had one for 11 yards.

The Cobras registered 14 first downs in the game and werepenalized seven times for 55 yards. They fumbled twice, butrecovered both.

On defense, Wesson was led by Wilson’s eighttackles. Terry Henson had six stops while Williams, Watson and JohnKnight had five each. Sims, Davis and Craft recorded aninterception apiece.

The Enterprise running game was led by MT Martin who had 62yards on five carries. Chris Moak picked up 33 yards on ninecarries. Also running the ball for the Jackets were Peter Aleman,Barker (one TD), Johnathon Martin, Deon Pendleton and McKee.

Barker completed seven of 18 passes for 112 yards. He was pickedoff three times. Zach Jackson had three receptions for 53 yards andMcKee had one for 21 yards. Cody Brister and MT Martin both had 17yard catches.

Barker punted twice for an average of 26.5 yards per punt.

Topping the Enterprise defense was Josh Nations with 11 tackles.MT Martin had nine stops in the game and Aleman had six.

Wesson returns home Friday for its next game as the Cobras hostWest Lincoln’s Bears. Enterprise travels cross-county to visit theLoyd Star Hornets for the Sting Bowl.
