Services for Mildred B. Avera of McComb are 10:30 a.m.,Saturday, Aug. 19, at Hartman Funeral Home with burial in Mars HillCemetery.

Visitation is Friday, Aug. 18, from 5-8 p.m. and 9-10:30 a.m.Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Avera, 93, died Aug. 17, 2000, of heart failure atSMRMC.

She was a teacher and administrator, retiring as principal ofE.M. Boyd Elementary in 1971. She was a charter member of theGreenville chapter of American Association of University Women, acharter member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Lambda Chapter andlater a member of Alpha Theta Chapter, Greenville Women’s FederatedClub, and had served as state president of the MississippiElementary School Principals Association. She was a member of FirstBaptist Church, where she was the librarian.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Marvin Avera.

Survivors are her brother, Hilburn Burris of McComb; and hersisters, Mary Gill of Bude and Joyce Boyd of Hattiesburg.

Memorials may be made to the library of First BaptistChurch.

Rita Darby Burnett

Mrs. Burnett, 70, died Aug. 17, 2000, at King’s DaughtersMedical Center. She was born in Brookhaven on Jan. 4, 1930, toGeorge L. Darby and Verlia Aby Burns Darby.

She was a registered nurse and was Lincoln County School Nursefrom 1970-1995. She was the recipient of the Exchange Club’s GoldenDeeds Award for outstanding community service. She was a member ofPleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and her daughter,Denise Burnett.

Survivors are her daughter, Catherine Barrilleaux of Brookhaven;her brother, Richard “Bud” Darby of Beaumont, Texas; her grandsonand his wife, Kristopher and Katrina Barrilleaux of Hattiesburg;her granddaughter, GiGi Barrilleaux of Brookhaven; a specialfriend, Joyce Woods; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Mellie J. Bullard

Services for Mellie J. Bullard of Ocean Springs, and formerly ofBrookhaven, are 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 19, at Bradford-O’KeefeFuneral Home Ocean Springs Chapel with burial in Magnolia Cemeteryin Meridian.

Mrs. Bullard, 94, died Aug. 16, 2000, in Ocean Springs. She wasa resident of the Ocean Springs community for 34 years.

She had taught first grade for 32 years. She was a member ofFirst Methodist Church of Biloxi

Preceding her in death were her husband, Luther Leroy Bullard;her son, James Bullard; her sisters, Ida Lee Parks, Bessie Lee, andMamie Jones; and her brothers, Willie David Jones and Louie EllisJones.

Survivors are her sons, John R. Bullard of Anchorage, Alaska,and Luther Steven Bullard of Ocean Springs; her brother, Robert M.Jones of Texas; and four grandchildren and sevengreat-grandchildren.

Alberta W. Sullivan

Mrs. Sullivan, 77, died Aug. 16, 2000, of heart failure atHospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was born in Franklin County onDec. 17, 1922, to Elbert Monroe Wallace and Georgia Anna LeeWallace.

She was a retired school cafeteria worker and nurses’ assistant.She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, WilliamLouis Sullivan; her son, Bobby Sullivan; and two brothers, threesisters, and two half brothers.

Survivors are her son, Billy W. Sullivan of Brookhaven; herdaughter, Myrtle R. Byrd of Meadville; her sister, Ella Lee Sealeof Meadville; and nine grandchildren and a host ofgreat-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
