Wesson, Loyd Star, N. Pike girls win

WESSON — The Wesson Lady Cobras pulled off a big 37-27 victoryover the Natchez Cathedral Lady Greenies Saturday night in theopening round of the Wesson Invitational Tournament.
Wesson held off Natchez Cathedral for a 50-44 win. In otherfirst round games, Dexter nipped Bogue Chitto 63-62 at the buzzer,Loyd Star knocked off defending champ North Pike 84-70 and St.Aloysius thumped Enterprise 64-39.
Monday’s loser’s bracket feature the Enterprise boys facingNorth Pike at 11:30 a.m. Bogue Chitto facing Cathedral at 2:30p.m.
In the winner’s bracket Monday, the Loyd Star boys clash withSt. Aloysius at 5:30 and Wesson tangles with Dexter at 8:30.
Wesson 50, Cathedral 44
Blake Pickett directed the 4-8 host Cobras with 12 points in thewin. Wade Williams scored 11 points.
Wesson trailed Cathedral 26-23 at the half after leading 16-8 inthe first quarter. In the second half, the Cobras outscored theGreenies 27-18 to secure the win.
“We didn’t play too well,” said first-year Wesson boys coach RonKessler.
Russell Barnes scored a game-high 21 points for Cathedral.
Dexter 63, Bogue Chitto 62
A three-pointer from Shaped Brown at the buzzer pushed Dexterinto Monday’s winners bracket. Ricco Haynes and Kenneth Bell pacedthe Bulldogs with 15 points apiece.
Bogue Chitto got a game-high 22 points from Irrie Catchings.Daniel Howard and Michael Blackwell followed with 10 pointsapiece.
St. Aloysius 64, Enterprise 39
The 1-13 Enterprise boys played St. Al close in the firstquarter, trailing by three points, 16-13. The Flashes exploded fora 19-4 run to take a 35-17 lead at the half.
“St. Al is much improved,” said Enterprise boys coach Ricky Grayafter the loss. “They shoot the ball real well. This was a goodgame for us. We’re getting better game by game.”
Corey Smith powered Enterprise with 18 points. Matt Floyd netted10 points.
Leading St. Al with 18 points was Kyle Richards. John Hossemannscored 15 points, including five 3-pointers. Following with 14points was Drew Mazzenti.
Loyd Star 84, North Pike 70
The 11-1 Loyd Star Hornets held off a late second-half run bydefending champ North Pike in a rematch of last year’s title game.Loyd Star led 21-12 in the first quarter and 45-25 at halftime. TheJaguars, coached by Keith Russ, outscored the Hornets 22-16 in thethird quarter to cut the deficit to 61-47 going into the finalframe.
“I am proud of the way we played,” said Loyd Star boys coachGene “Moochie” Britt. “We had a total team effort fromeverybody.”
Senior guard Jared Britt recorded a game-high 34 points for theHornets. Britt also collected nine rebounds and made two steals.Tyler Williford fired in 23 points and pulled down five rebounds.Finishing with 14 points and five rebounds was Sydney Chester.
“We played as good as we could have,” stated Coach Britt of thefirst half. “We hit five 3-pointers in the first half. We deniedNorth Pike their inside game. We forced them to shoot from theoutside.”
Glover Quinn netted 28 points for the Jaguars. Alex Millerfollowed with 17 points.
