Officials said Tuesday an elderly Brookhaven woman remains atthe Baton Rouge General Medical Center Burn Unit after she wasinjured in a Monday morning fire at her home.
Baton Rouge Burn Unit officials said Doris McBride, of 1057Crooked Lane, was resting in critical condition Tuesday morning. She sustained burns to her face and airway during a fire that beganin her home around 3 a.m. Monday.
Firefighters said McBride had gone back into her home to rescueher dog and when she brought him out she had burns to her face andsignificant smoke inhalation. They said she was able to respond toquestions.
She was taken to King’s Daughters Medical Center by ambulance, and from there she was flown to Baton Rouge, Brookhaven FireDepartment Shift Capt. Furman Freeman said.
Fire Chief Tony Weeks said at this point there is still noindication of what might have started the fire. He said it’s alsostill unclear whether or not McBride had insurance on her home, which was a total loss on structure and content.
“It’s so important that people keep smoke alarms and freshbatteries in them,” Weeks said. “You have to keep fresh batteriesand keep them working, and that will give you a warning in asituation like this.”
Weeks said he didn’t know if McBride had smoke alarms or not,but that they are an important safety precaution for anyone.
“A lot of times when your batteries wear down, there’s a littlewarning signal and it’ll let you know if it’s about to go out,” hesaid.
Meanwhile, Weeks also reported that firefighter Jermaine Culver, who received burns on his hand and ear during the firefight, isdoing well.
“He’s fine. I’ve gotta hand it to him, you’re not going to getburned if you’re not in there close to it doing your job,” hesaid.
