Mary Adine ‘Deena’ Becker Hill

On Sunday, May 21, 2006, Mary Adine (Deena) Becker Hill died atHillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham, N.C. She had been illsince suffering a heart attack while cleaning her yard in Mobileafter Hurricane Katrina.
Adine was born April 25, 1923, in Brookhaven, daughter of JamesAngelo and Sarah Williamson Becker. She met her husband of 53years, Chester Wilson Hill (deceased Nov. 11, 1998), on a blinddate at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during World War II. Chester andAdine took great pleasure in being active participants in thesocial and cultural life of Mobile. She was a voracious reader whosat up many a night until midnight with a book in her hands. Shewas a tennis player long after the fainter of heart had given upthe game.
Mrs. Hill was active in the Mobile Opera Guild, St. IgnatiusChurch and long lived book and supper clubs. She loved all thingsMississippian and never shied away from a bridge table. A greatlover of flowers, music, arts and literature she traveled more thana half-dozen times to Europe. Deena is remembered as a kind,gracious and diplomatic woman who enjoyed her life and will besorely missed.
Deena was preceded in death by her parents, husband and onlysister, Sally Becker Denhollem.
She leaves behind a younger brother, James Angelo Becker, ofJackson, Miss., and six children, Mary Hill Finger, of Arlington,Va., Jackson Becker Hill, of New Orleans, La., Martha Hill Brown,of Driftwood, Texas, Benoit (Ben) Mitchell Hill, of Mobile, Ala.,Elizabeth Hill Sherrill, of Raleigh, N.C., and Kathleen HillGraves, of Durham, N.C. She is also mourned by her sons-in-law anddaughter-in-law, her 11 grandchildren, three great-grandsons andher many friends and relations.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. today,May 24, 2006, at Radney Funeral Home, Dauphin Street, Mobile, Ala.,with the Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will becelebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2006, from St. IgnatiusCatholic Church. Internment will be at the Spring HillCemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made toassist in the rebuilding of the New Orleans Public Library system.Funeral arrangements by Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin St.,Mobile, AL 36606.
