Strong winds and heavy rains kept Brookhaven authorities busySunday evening as they dealt with broken tree limbs and fallenpower lines throughout the city.
“It hit more or less in spots. I think we were real fortunatethat a lot of it went around us,” said Brookhaven Fire Chief PaulCartwright.
No fires were reported in the city during the strong electricalstorm, but the fire department did respond to a number of callsabout downed limbs and power lines, Cartwright said.
A fierce wind caused three power poles to break in half onIngram Street around 6 p.m. The power lines landed on severalvehicles and in the street, causing a hazardous situation,Cartwright said.
Firefighters and police officers cleared the many areas wherepower lines were down Sunday evening. They blocked the streetsuntil power officials arrived to fix the poles and lines.
Lincoln County was under three severe thunderstorm warnings from2:45 to 7:40 p.m. Sunday.
Lincoln County Civil Defense Director Clifford Galey reportedthat at least two trees in the county were reported as blockingroadways in the Auburn Drive area, but most of the damage wasinside the Brookhaven city limits.
He received dozens of reports of limbs down in the city, including a large one on Josephine Street.
“A whole top of a tree fell on a house,” said Galey, adding thatno one was reported injured during the storm.
The railroad track was blocked by fallen trees in a few areas, but emergency crews worked hard to clear it and any otherobstructed roadways.
“Apparently the city crews did a great job last night because Ididn’t find any streets still blocked,” said Galey about theefforts today.
Authorities from surrounding counties reported minor damagesfrom fallen tree limbs and power lines.
Power went off in a number of areas, but power officials had itback on in a timely manner.
