Brakemen split with Lumberjacks

The Brookhaven Brakemen settled for a Sunday afternoon splitwith the Clinton Lumberjacks. Brookhaven won the Cotton StateLeague opener 7-2 on Brookhaven Academy’s field but Clinton won thenightcap 10-5 in nine innings.

Brookhaven (6-11) resumes play tonight, visiting the HattiesburgHub City Wheels for a 6:30 game. The Brakemen host PoplarvilleTuesday night at 6:30 on BA’s Cougar Field.

The Brakemen started fast, scoring 3 runs in the bottom of thefirst. First baseman Seth Lofton provided an RBI single for thegame’s first run and rightfielder Anthony McLin followed with a2-run, RBI double.

Leftfielder Joey Sullivan went 2-for-2 to fuel Brookhaven’sattack. Ben Goza and Josh Thoms singled.

On the mound, Lance Deville pitched the victory with relief helpfrom Jacob Leggett. Deville, a right-hander from Franklin County byway of Louisiana, gave up 2 runs on 4 hits in 4 innings. He struckout 1 and walked 4.

Leggett struck out 2 batters, did not issue a base on balls andallowed 2 runs on 1 hit in 3 innings of relief.

Michael Wakefield started on the mound for Clinton and went thedistance. He struck out 3 batters, walked 2, hit 2 and allowed 5earned runs on 7 hits.

Clinton 10, Brookhaven 5

The Lumberjacks exploded for 5 runs in the top of the ninth,capitalizing on 3 Brookhaven errors. Clinton scored 3 runs in thesixth to gain a 5-5 deadlock.

The Jacks got solo homers from Brad Tasin and Marc Chism.

Michael Walton started on the mound for Clinton and was replacedby Ryan Roberson in the fifth. Roberson held the Brakemenscoreless, giving up 3 hits, striking out 3 and walking 3 to claimthe victory.

Walton gave up 5 runs on 4 hits. He struck out 5 and walked7.

Cass Brister started for Brookhaven. In 5 innings, Brister gaveup 5 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits, struck out 3 and walked 3.

Lofton replaced Brister on the mound and absorbed the loss. Heallowed 2 hits, struck out 2, walked 3 and hit 1 batter. None ofthe 5 ninth-inning runs were earned.

At the plate, Brookhaven got a triple and a single from Goza.McLin singled twice. Sullivan, Lofton and Jeb Lee singled.
