The Brookhaven Police Department assisted in capturing an escaped inmate Wednesday evening, authorities said.
BPD and other law enforcement agencies located Kevin Dwayne Hopkins at a trailer home on Jada Trail about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, said Assistant Police Chief Bobby Bell.
A Rankin County inmate, Hopkins had been on a work detail at the Rankin County Animal control Facility Wednesday and left there in a white vehicle Wednesday afternoon, reported WAPT News.
He initially tried to hide in the trailer home when law enforcement arrived at the property Wednesday evening but then surrendered peacefully, said Bell.
He had apparently been in Brookhaven a couple of hours.
Hopkins was alone at the time of his arrest. The trailer home he was found at belonged to a friend, Bell said.
A tip led Rankin County authorities to seek Hopkins in Brookhaven. His vehicle was found in a parking lot on Brookway Boulevard, and he’s believed to have walked to Jada Trail from there, Bell said.
About four BPD officers, Rankin County Sheriff’s Office authorities and federal marshals all cooperated in the arrest,
Hopkins, 46, was serving time for a misdemeanor shoplifting charge but will now face misdemeanor escape and grand larceny charges, WAPT reported.
