Suspect in weekend carjacking still sought

Monticello police are still looking for a Lawrence County mansuspected of carjacking and kidnapping a 27-year-old womanSunday.

McArthur Mackey, 20, of Nola Road, who is out on bond inconnection with a May 2004 drug-sale charge, is believed to stillbe in the area, Monticello Police Chief David Stanley said. Policeare asking anyone with information on Mackey’s whereabouts tocontact them.

CrimeStoppers announced Friday a reward of up to $1,000 forinformation leading to Mackey’s arrest, Stanley said. Informantsare not required to give their name and are asked to call1-866-792-7867 and leave their information.

Police are not identifying the victim in Sunday’s allegedcarjacking. She suffered only minor injuries in the incident.

According to the victim, Mackey insinuated he had a handgun andforcibly entered her vehicle around 6:30 p.m. at the intersectionof Highways 27 and 84. The woman managed to escape by leaping fromthe vehicle on Crawford Camp Lane, Monticello police Capt. CharlesWhite said.

The victim’s car was recovered Monday after Mackey led police ona high-speed chase on Highway 27 and lost control, crashing intothe woods near Oma. The suspect fled into the woods and a search ofthe area failed to locate him, White said.

Officers have searched more than a dozen locations in the pastfew days but have not found Mackey, Stanley said.
