WESSON – Freshman guard T’Keya Moore pumped in a game-high 28 points to lead three Co-Lin players in double figures and the Lady Wolves managed to edge the Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats 92-89 Monday night in overtime. The victory continued their 5-game winning streak as they remained undefeated at home in South Divisional JUCO basketball action in Graydon L. Mullen Gymnasium.

In men’s action, the Bobcats held off the Wolves’ late rally to escape with a 77-71 victory.

Co-Lin continues action Thursday. They host the Southwest Bears for two big South Division games. The women tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8.

Co-Lin 92, Jones Co. 89, OT

The Lady Bobcats came out strong in the first half and battled the Lady Wolves in a tough, physical contest. Jones County led 37-28 at halftime.

In the second half, the Lady Wolves (16-3, 7-1) used their strong aggressive defense to overpower the Lady Bobcats and take a 44-43 lead on a 16-6 run.

Co-Lin continued to increase the lead and held a 14-point advantage in the second half, before Jones County rallied to tie the game at 80-all and force overtime.

In overtime, Co-Lin and Jones fought back and forth in an exciting battle. The Lady Wolves outscored the Lady Bobcats 12-9 to preserve the win. Moore hit a huge shot inside the lane to put Co-Lin up by 3 points in the closing seconds.

Vintrice Briggs contributed 17 points to help lead the Lady Wolves. Ashley Minor netted 10 points. Jessica Jackson was the leader on the boards with 6 rebounds.

“This was an exciting, but ugly game,” said Co-Lin women’s coach Gwyn Young. “Jones County came out and played really hard tonight. They did a good job outrebounding us in the game.

“We played a lot better in the second half after a sluggish first half performance,” continued Young. “We managed to create some big turnovers with our aggressive defense to take the lead and get the win in overtime. Overall, we still need to improve on rebounding the ball better, running our half-court defense and executing on offense.”

The Lady Bobcats had four players score in double figures on the freshman-laden roster. Caitlyn Spane, 6-1 forward from Columbia, directed Jones County with a team-high 20 points. North Pike alums Precious Jefferson and Kaylan Hughes provided a strong performance as Jefferson netted 20 points and Hughes provided 18. LaTisha McCullum helped pace the Lady Bobcats with a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Jefferson also collected 10 rebounds.

Jones Co. 77, Co-Lin 71

The Wolves and Bobcats provided another tough, physical battle for their basketball fans. In a see-saw contest, the Wolves (4-15, 2-6) managed to take control and command a 38-30 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Jones County charged back and seized the lead. In a back-and-forth battle, the Bobcats managed to increase their lead to 10-points.

Co-Lin, refusing to give-up, rallied in the last four minutes of the game but fell short in their efforts.

Sophomore guard Joseph Cunningham poured in a team-high 14 points to lead three Co-Lin players in double digits. Jay Case and Terrance James contributed 10 points apiece. Fred Fairman was the leader on the boards with 9 rebounds.

“This is the third straight game for us to be up at halftime, but fail to maintain the lead for the win,” said Co-Lin men’s coach Dennis Sims. “We came out with energy in the first half, but in the second half we played tired.

“When you are up by eight points at home, you should not be beaten,” continued Sims. “We did not guard anyone on defense the entire game. Overall, I was pleased with the last four minutes of the game, when some of the guys stepped up and were motivated to make a comeback.”

Sophomore guard Donta Pittman of Wayne County directed the Bobcats’ offense with a game-high 18 points. J.J. Bolton netted 17 points. Corey Jackson had 11 points. Detrick Davis paced Jones County on the boards with 9 rebounds.
