WESSON — The Co-Lin Lady Wolves needed this South Division gameand got it Thursday night with a 78-52 win over the Jones CountyLady Bobcats in Mullen Gymnasium. The game was delayed 25 minutesdue to the road conditions that caused Jones County to arrivelate.

In the men’s game, Jones County played well enough in the secondhalf to pull out a 61-50 victory over Co-Lin.

The Lady Wolves (13-6, 8-2) had five players to finish the gamein double figures.

Co-Lin was powered by freshen forward Travalyn Smith with 16points and two steals. Freshman guard Jessica Melton pumped in 13points, grabbed seven rebounds, made two steals and had fourassists. Firing in 11 points apiece were Dana King and ReneeFields. Gloria Lewis scored 10 points and had three assists. Fieldsled off the backboards with nine rebounds. Lauren Williamscollected seven rebounds.

“I was pleased,” said Co-Lin women’s head coach Gwyn Young. “Wehad real good bench play.”

Jones County (11-9, 6-4) lead briefly, 5-4, at the 16:10 mark ona three-point shot from forward Natalie Jordan. A Lewis jumper putCo-Lin back up 6-5 seconds later. The Lady Wolves were leading by10 points, 24-14, when freshmen guard Dana King sacked back-to-backthree-pointers to push Co-Lin’s lead to 30-14 with 6:28 left. Bothteams hit a cold spell in the final five minutes as the Lady Wolvesenjoyed a 32-17 lead at the half.

“In the last five minutes of the first half, we didn’t execute,”stated Young. “I thought we handled their press pretty good.”

Co-Lin started off the second half with a jumper from Lewis topush their lead to 17 points, 34-17. At the 12:48 mark, Smithnailed a jumper to give the Lady Wolves a 22-point, 50-28 lead.

Leading Jones County was freshman Brittany Baham with 13 pointsand five rebounds. Netting 10 points and grabbing five rebounds wasJordan. Sandra Sumrall coaches the Lady Bobcats.

Jones County 61, Co-Lin 50

The Wolves (10-9, 5-5) lead early in the first half, by as muchas five points, 19-14 at the 6:20 mark. Bobcat Milton Collinsnailed a three-pointer and teammate Jonathan McCarty followed witha pair of free throws to tie the game at 19-all. The lead went backand forth with the Wolves going up 26-25 on a field goal byfreshmen guard Dartez Edwards off a steal with 54 seconds left.Jones County’s John Gray nailed a three-pointer with 15 secondsleft to take a 29-28 lead in at halftime.

“Jones County has tremendous team speed,” said Co-Lin men’s headcoach Dennis Sims. “Jones County played much better the first timewe played them. It was a sloppy game.”

The Bobcats began to take control at the 12:16 mark when BobcatMarvin McDonald’s jumper gave Jones County a 38-36 lead. ShedrickKirk scored a field goal and teammate McDonald hit a three-pointerto give Jones County a 43-36 lead with 10:09 left to play.

Co-Lin cut the deficit to six points several times but could notcatch up to faster Jones County down the stretch.

Freshmen guard Ledell Eackles led the Wolves with 18 points. DonLockhart netted 10 points. Tops off the backboards was DerrickStewart with 10 rebounds.

Powering Jones County (16-4, 7-3) with 18 points was Gray. Kirkfinished with 13 points. Coaching the Bobcats is RobertMcInnis.
