WESSON — The old Wesson High School has taken another steptoward renovations that will transform the building into a type ofcommunity center and library.

A financial account was set up recently for contributions anddonations to the upcoming renovation project, said Ward ThreeAlderman and Mayor Pro-tem Lura Greer.

“I’m excited that we are getting started with this,” she added,mentioning how much contributions are needed to make the projectpossible.

Contributions may be sent to Trustmark National Bank, c/oFriends of the Library-Old Wesson High School Renovation Fund, P.O.Box 307, Wesson, MS 39191.

The funds will be used for completely renovating the old school,which is no longer in use and has become dilapidated.

Renovations will consist of several phases that residents hopewill get underway next year. The old school will serve manypurposes once renovations are complete.

“The basement will be for the senior citizens and Boy Scouts,and the first floor will be for a library and museum,” saidGreer.

A possible $3 million grant from the legislature’s LibraryCapital Improvements Fund will assist during the renovationproject. The Friends of the Library group plans to apply for thecompetitive grant soon.

“If we are able to get that grant, it would be just wonderful,”said Greer. The grant would not be given until February 2001.

Greer is excited about the chance to revive the old school,which was built in 1893.

“It stands out as an exceptional example of Romanesque-stylearchitecture in the state,” she said about the school, which islisted on the National Historical Register.
