Most of Wesson without power

Nearly two-thirds of Wesson residents were still without powerMonday morning and at least five homes were damaged or destroyedafter a severe storm ripped through the town Sunday night.

Police Officer Steve Carlisle said damage is fairly severe, andhe had been told it may be a few days before power is completelyrestored.

“We got a lot of damage,” he said. “A lot of trees are down andsome homes are damaged. I keep finding more and more damage.”

Fortunately, Carlisle said, he has received no reports of anyinjuries.

Most businesses in town were largely unaffected, he said. He hasseen a few missing some tin or shingles, but no major damage.

Corey Smith, a lieutenant with the Wesson Volunteer FireDepartment, said they were out from around 8 p.m. until aftermidnight clearing roads. Most roads were clear Monday morning.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Interstate 55 wasblocked by fallen trees Sunday night near mile marker 51.

Unconfirmed reports indicate the interstate was blocked for sometime between 30 minutes and two hours.

Son Nguyen of Brandon was among several travelers delayed by thedamage.

“From here to Byram it’s pretty bad,” he said after talking to arelative in Brandon on his cellphone.

There was no lasting damage to the interstate and traffic wasflowing normally again by Monday morning.
