Lady Wolves take pair from Lady Eagles

RAYMOND — The Lady Wolves collected two big wins over the HindsCommunity College Lady Eagle fastpitch softball team Thursdaynight. Co-Lin won the opener 5-4 and the final 13-4.
“It’s been a long hard grind,” said Co-Lin women’s headfastpitch coach Allen Kent. “We played14 games in a row. We arelooking forward to returning home on the 20th.”
Co-Lin hosts East Central on Tuesday, March 20, beginning at 1p.m.
Co-Lin 5, Hinds 4
Co-Lin scratched first in the second inning when Kayla Crochetled off with a single and second baseman. Meleah Brown drilled atowering homerun to left. In the third, Kady King singled, stolesecond, and scored a single by Erin Douglass.
Hinds added a run in the 5th, but Co-Lin answered with an AshleySykes RBI single in the 6th.
In the bottom, Hinds tied it with three singles, a walk and aCo-Lin error.
In the top of the 7th with one out, Annie Selman collected herthird hit of the game and promptly stole second and advanced to thethird when the throw got by the shortstop.
Kady King’s ground ball to second allowed Selman to score theeventual game-winner.
Hinds threatened in the bottom of the 7th. Kate Wood singled.With two out, Candace Pacotello hit a sinking line drive to rightfield. Right-fielder Kaylin Burke got a good jump and made a divinggame-saving catch.
All-Region sophomore Erin Douglass authored the win, scattering7 hits and 3 earned runs. She struck out four and walked two.
Selman paced the hitting attack with a double, two singles andtwo steals. In addition to the homerun, Brown singled. hittingsafely was Ashley Sykes and Lauren Smith.
“Erin kept us in it against a great-hitting Hinds club, ” saidKent. “Kaylin’s catch to end the game was huge. If it gets by her,they at least tie the game and possibly win it. But it didn’tsurprise me, she does it every day in practice.”

The Lady Wolves pounded out 16 hits in the five-inning run-rulegame. Selman led off the game with a single and stole second.Douglass walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Douglasswalked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Brown, Ashley Sykesand Lauren Smith each hit RBI singles to open up a 3-0 lead.
In the 2nd, Selman and King drew a one-out walk and scored onBrown’s double to right center. Following a single by Sykes, LaurenSmith’s single drove in Brown, for a 6-1 lead. Hinds scratched arun in the first and second innings.
In the 4th, Brown and Sykes singled and advanced on Smith’ssacrifice bunt. Brooke Caston’s double drove in two.
In the 5th, King and Douglass reached on errors, setting upBrown for a deep homerun to Center Field.
Sykes, Caston and Britnee Smith then drew walks to load thebases. Kaylin Burkes’ double off the left-field wall drove in theLady Wolves final two runs.
Co-Lin allowed two runs in the 5th before closing it out. Fourerrors and a single added to the cause. Caroline Burkes collectedthe win, allowing five hits and one earned run with two walks andno strikeouts.
QUOTE: “I still think Hinds is one of the best hitting teams inthe state, our pitchers did a good job keeping them off the bases.Caroline was very effective.”
Brown led the Lady Wolves hitting attack with a 4 for 4 effort.A homerun double, 2 singles, 6 RBI and 4 runs scored was a big key.Sykes was 3 for 3 with a walk, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Selman andDouglass each had two hits and two runs scored.
“It was a pretty good day offensively for us,” added Kent.”Meleah had a career day, going 6 for 7 with 2 big homeruns, 8 RBIand 5 runs scored. Ashley swung the bat well, getting robbed on acouple more hard-hit balls. Annie had a big day, we need herclicking like that at the top of the lineup.
