Lady Panthers overpower Pearl, North Pike in debut

The Brookhaven Lady Panthers began their season Saturday morningby christening newly renovated Mamie Martin Field with a pair ofwins in the Ole Brook Classic.
Ole Brook head coach Lisa Covington saw her ballclub open playwith an 8-4 win over the North Pike Lady Jaguars; then capped offthe tripleheader with a 9-3 decision over the Pearl LadyPirates.
In the middle game, Pearl shut out North Pike 18-0, limiting theLady Jags to 5 hits.
Brookhaven hosts West Lincoln while North Pike hosts LawrenceCounty Tuesday for a JV/Varsity doubleheaders at 6 p.m. TheBrookhaven/West Lincoln game originally was scheduled forThursday.
Brookhaven 8, North Pike 4
Both teams took several innings to overcome early seasonjitters.
North Pike (0-1) drew first blood in the fourth to take a 2-0lead. Maggie Dunaway and Hali Sasser each scored on RBI singles byTori Gaskin and Kaitlyn Perry. That lead increased to 3-0 in thefifth as Leonna Ballard scored on an error by Brookhaven.
The Lady Panthers (1-0) responded in their half of the fifth, totake a 4-3 lead they never relinquished.
Christi Martin, Sabrina Delaughter, Katie Stewart and TerriHodges crossed home plate. Left-centerfielder Julie Brister had a2-RBI double in the inning.
Ole Brook’s Brittany Smith picked up the first of two wins inthe classic, while Jenna Dickerson suffered a pair of losses.
The Lady Panthers were led by Hodges with 2 singles and adouble. Stewart had 3 singles and scored 2 runs.
North Pike, coached by Sonya Wallace, got a single and 2 doublesfrom Ballard. Dunaway singled twice. Jennifer Coney singled anddoubled.
Pearl 18, North Pike 0
The Lady Pirates (1-0) produced 22 hits in the victory. PitcherKatie Williamson led the Pearl offensive with 4 singles and 4 runsscored. Sam Wade singled twice and scored 4 runs. Whitney Jenkinshad 3 singles, a double and 4 runs scored. Williamson picked up thewin for Pearl, coached by Leigh Ann Purnell.
North Pike (0-2) got singles from Ballard (2), Sagan King,Dunaway and Gaskin.
“We are a very young team, experience-wise,” said Coach Wallace.”We made a lot of errors today. We have a lot of work to do to getbetter.”
Brookhaven 9, Pearl 3
The Lady Panthers (2-0) jumped on Pearl early, to the tune of an8-0 lead after 2 innings. Ole Brook pounded out 10 hits in the2-inning stretch, as Hodges and Sykes each scored twice.
The Lady Pirates (1-1) cut their deficit to 5 runs, 8-3 in thethird and fourth innings. Williamson and Ashley Beasley scored inthe third, while Hannah Peggler crossed homeplate in the fourth.Williamson suffered the loss for Pearl.
Ole Brook got support from Kelly Vinson with 3 singles. ChristiMartin singled twice and doubled. Sykes singled, doubled and scored3 runs. Hodges scored twice.
“We had a good day today,” said Covington. “We scored some runsand got some hits. We need to get better on defense.” Covington wasreferring to her team’s 9 errors during their 2 games.
Pearl was led by Williamson with 3 singles. Peggler singledtwice.
“We are very young,” said Purnell. “It showed up today. A lot ofour players do not have much experience.”
