Hinds Bulldogs ambush Co-Lin 72-69

UTICA – Edward Mack tossed in 18 points and Keydrick Williamsadded 10 to lead the Hinds Community College Bulldogs to a 72-69upset win over the Co-Lin Wolves Monday night at J.D. BoydGymnasium.

Hinds raised its record to 6-13 and 2-7 in South Division play.Co-Lin dropped to 15-5 and 5-4.

The Wolfpack will host Pearl River Thursday with tipoff at 8p.m.

“We just didn’t play well tonight,” said Co-Lin head coachDennis Sims.

Both teams were trying to get the feel for each other at theoutset. Co-Lin had numerous opportunities early, but the shots justwouldn’t fall. Turnovers also played a key role in the narrow threepoint loss.

Hinds held an early 4-0 lead and gave Co-Lin all they couldhandle. The Bulldogs gained several advantages and held off allWolfpack rallies to absorb the win.

Co-Lin battled back to gain its largest lead of the game, 15-9,on a basket by sophomore guard Barry Whitley. Whitley led theWolves with 19 points.

With Hinds trailing 15-14, Williams would slam home back-to-backoffensive rebounds to give the Bulldogs an 18-15 lead. Those twodunks brought the home crowd to its feet, as the maroon and goldclad fans sensed a change in momentum.

Co-Lin, trailing 31-27 at halftime, eventually got a tipinbasket by Brandon Barfield to take a 37-36 lead.

Hinds would answer with James Dixon canning a short jumper toregain the lead 38-37. Edward Mack, a 6-3 freshman guard fromJackson, then scored six points in a 15-6 run to give Hinds a 52-41lead.

Every time Co-Lin would make a run at Hinds, the Bulldogs had ananswer for it. The Wolves did cut the deficit to four, 56-52, asWhitley bagged two free throws.

A basket by Mack with under six minutes left in the game put theBulldogs up 63-54.

The Wolves then used a 12-4 run to cut Hinds’ lead to one at67-66 on a three-point play by Barfield.

A free throw by Mack and an offensive putback by McKee after afree throw by Wolfpack guard Rod Hayes gave the Bulldogs a 70-67advantage with 1:07 remaining in the game.

A basket by Barfield with 41 seconds remaining cut Hinds’ leadto 70-69. McKee then closed the scoring with a basket with 10seconds to go. Several scoring attempts by the Wolves wereunsuccessful as time expired.

“Hinds is not a bad team,” added Sims. “They played well.”
