Franklin County girls second in fast-pitch

BRANDON – The Newton County girls handed Franklin County a 14-2loss in State Class 1A-2A-3A Fast-Pitch Softball Championship gameSaturday at Shiloh Park. Newton (24-3) went through the tournamentundefeated. Franklin finished second in the state with a 22-9worksheet.

Franklin County beat New Albany 3-2 in the finals of the losers’bracket to meet Newton County for the championship.

Earlier games in the losers’ bracket; Franklin eliminated PassChristian 7-1, nipped Mooreville 5-4 and dumped Resurrection5-2.

Franklin fell to Pass Christian 3-0 in the first round.

Newton Co. 14, Franklin Co. 2

Newton County was led to the championship on JackieAvent’s home run and two singles. Also going 3-for-5 was KristinChaney. April Burkin and Shanna Jones collected two hits apiece.Burkin (16-2) was the winning with one strikeout and onewalk.

The losing pitcher was Mandy McGehee (21-8) with twostrikeouts, one walk and one hit batter in 5 1/3 innings. CassieThornton finished the final 2 2/3 innings in relief.

Franklin Co. 3, New Albany 2

Sparking Franklin County with a double was JanetChapman. McGehee nailed the win, striking out nine batters andwalking two. Ashlee Frazier (20-3) struck out four and walkednone.

Franklin Co. 7, Pass Christian 1

Janet Chapman doubled and singled for Franklin. McGeheecollected two singles.

Franklin Co. 4, Mooreville 3

Lisa McCullough (16-5) was the loser with one strikeout,one walk and two hit batesmen in the first game Saturday. Not hitswere made by either team.

Franklin Co. 5, Resurrection 2

Jenny Chapman led Franklin with three hits for three RBIin Friday’s game. The Lady Dawgs bunted five times for 4RBI.

Crystal Williams tripled for Resurrection. Losingpitchers Aimee Guillott and Kelly Pamer combined for 8 strikeoutsand 4 walks.
