Funeral services for Opal “Sally” L. Smith, of Bogue Chitto, are11 a.m. on Friday, April 1, at Riverwood Family Funeral ServiceChapel, with burial in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.Riverwood Family Funeral Service is in charge ofarrangements.

Visitation is Thursday from 5 until 8 p.m. at Riverwood.

Mrs. Smith, 95, died March 27, 2011, at King’s Daughters MedicalCenter. She was born in Crete, Tex. on June 9, 1915, to Eugene Simand Gibralta Bass Maricle.

She was a retired schoolteacher and avid reader. She was descendedfrom pioneer families of South Carolina and Texas. She was a memberof the Thomas Paine Chapter of the Daughters of the AmericanRevolution through her ancestor, Joshua Perkins. After graduatingfrom Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches, Tex., she taughtelementary students in Pasadena, Tex. Mrs. Smith was known in BogueChitto as “Sally,” a nickname her husband gave her. She enjoyedgood health throughout her 95 years and as recently as two weeksago could be seen driving her car, an accomplishment in which shetook great pride. She was a dedicated member of Pleasant HillBaptist Church in Bogue Chitto.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Robert “Bob”E. Smith; and her sister, Oma Maricle Hall.

Survivors are her niece, Arlen Hall Westergaard of Texas; her firstcousin, Sandra McKinnon Loridans of Chapala, Mexico; hergreat-niece, Dr. Deborah Marie Westergaard of Dallas, Tex.; hergreat-nephew, Edwin H. Westergaard of Denver, Col.; herbrother-in-law, Rudalph Smith of Baton Rouge, La.; hersisters-in-law, Pauline Burns of Bogue Chitto, Ayleen Callender ofHixton, Tenn., and Magdalene Smith of Brookhaven; her stepgrandchildren, Margaret “Meg” Smith of Raleigh, N.C., Robert Brownand Mark Brown of Rochester, N.Y.; Chris Brown of Dallas, Tex.;Matthew Brown of Shreveport, La.; and Timothy Brown ofPhiladelphia, Penn.

The family wishes to publicly acknowledge the dedicated nursingservice of Mrs. Smith’s step-granddaughter, Margaret “Meg”Smith.
