Officials to discuss status of fire official

Mayor Bob Massengill said he will meet with the Board ofAldermen today to discuss the status of Brookhaven Assistant FireChief Fred Smith.
Smith was arrested on Thanksgiving following an incident inwhich he allegedly shot into a vehicle. Smith, 50, of 300 GreenwoodLane, was charged with aggravated assault, according to Sheriff’sDepartment records.
Massengill said he plans to confer with aldermen regarding Smith’sstatus with the city today at 2 p.m.
“We’ll be deciding where we go from here,” the mayor said.
Since the matter involved personnel, the mayor speculated themeeting could be moved into executive session.
Massengill said the board would consider what options areavailable. Options the mayor mentioned include allowing Smith toremain on the job until the charge is ultimately resolved or asuspension, either with or without pay.
“That’s a board decision and not a mayor decision,” Massengillsaid.
Smith has worked with the Brookhaven Fire Department since theearly 1980s. He has been assistant chief since February.
