Copiah Co. trips Americans; Wesson plays Copiah tonight

WESSON — The Copiah County All-Stars handed the BrookhavenAmericans their first Dixie Youth Baseball AAA North SubdistrictSix Tournament loss Tuesday night, with a 9-7 win at Hiram C.Newman Memorial Field.

With the win, Wesson, the Americans and Copiah each have oneloss in the tournament. The Americans drew a bye. Wesson and Copiahplay tonight at 6 p.m. The Americans play the Wesson/Copiah winnerThursday night at 6 for the championship.

Copiah Co. jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first,garnering a 6-0 lead. Jacob Ashley, Bryce Berry, Garrett Chapin,Doug Strait, Austin Rodgers and Mason Boone scored for coaches JeffSmith, Robbie Boone and Jay Strait. Chapin, Strait and Rodgers hitconsecutive singles that drove in 4 runs in the inning.

The Americans cut their deficit to 5 runs, 6-1 in the second.Genoa Sartin reached on a fielder’s choice. Brandon Canny doubled.Will Lee walked to load the bases. Logan Smith reached on an errorthat allowed Sartin to score.

Copiah Co. extended its lead to 8-1 in the bottom half of thesecond. With 1 out, John Parker Campbell singled and moved tosecond on a wild pitch. Ashley walked. Three batters later,Strait’s RBI single scored Campbell and Ashley.

The Americans, coached by John Foster, Ricky Smith and JerryEvans, would not go away. In their half of the third, Jacob Leasingled. Hayden Hux reached on a 3-base error by Copiah Co. thatallowed Lea to score. Matthew Evans singled to score Hux. AlexSmith’s double scored Evans as Brookhaven trailed 8-4.

In the bottom of the third, Copiah Co. plated a run to lead 9-4.Mason Boone walked. Trent Boone singled. Three batters later, JoshCook singled home Mason Boone.

The Americans plated 1 run in the fourth and 2 runs in the fifthfor the final margin of victory.

In the fourth, Canny walked and advanced to second on a passedball. Lee reached on a fielding error that scored Canny. Lea andEvans crossed home plate in the fifth.

Ashley authored the win for Copiah Co., allowing 1 run, 4 hitsand 2 walks; while fanning 1 American batter in 2 innings. Berryand Campbell also saw action on the mound.

Lee suffered the loss for the Americans. He gave up 5 runs, 4hits with no walks or strikeouts. Canny and Evans made reliefappearances.

Offensively, Copiah Co. was led by Campbell with 2 singles.Strait singled twice. Trent Boone had 2 singles. Cook singledtwice. Rodgers doubled.

The Americans got 3 singles from Evans. Canny and Alex Smithdoubled.
