Officers raid drug suspect’s home, discover lab for making meth

A Lawrence County man faces additional drug charges after asearch of his home Thursday uncovered a homemade laboratory tomanufacture methamphetamine.

Johnny Speights, 49, and Robin Calcote Rogers, 32, both of 85Virginia Speights Lane, were arrested Wednesday night while beingout on bond for previous drug charges when more drugs were foundduring a traffic stop around 9:30 p.m., Lawrence County SheriffJoel Thames said.

Following a search of Speights’ home resulting from that arrest,he faces additional charges of possession of precursor chemicalswith intent to manufacture meth and a misdemeanor charge ofpossession of marijuana, Pearl River Basin Narcotics Task ForceAgent Joe Bullock said.

A search of the home Thursday discovered a medium-sizedlaboratory in the woods surrounding the property, Bullock said.

The lab was not “cooking” the drug at the time but was an activelab, he said.

A Department of Environmental Quality hazardous materials teamwas dispatched from Jackson to remove the lab. They finished theirclean up around 3 p.m., Bullock said.

The search also found a small amount of marijuana in the houseand a large amount of surveillance equipment placed around theproperty. Both the drug and the equipment were seized, he said.

The search was conducted by agents of the PRBNTF and SouthwestMississippi Narcotics Enforcement Unit and deputies of the Lawrenceand Lincoln county sheriff’s departments.

Speights has been charged with two counts of possession of acontrolled substance and single counts of possession of marijuanaless than one ounce, resisting arrest, improper equipment and notag in the traffic stop.

Rogers was a passenger in the car and faces the same three drugcharges, Thames said.

Both were previously released on bond for charges of possessionof a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and possession ofprecursor chemicals with intent to manufacture meth from a Mayseizure at the same residence.
