Access to alcohol won’t improve community or aid the economy

Dear Editor:

When we moved to Brookhaven 35 years ago, it was because we thought that this would be a great place to raise a family. And, we sure were right. It has been such a pleasure to enjoy the benefits of living in a caring community with such a safe, family friendly environment.

I love the people here and the image that our town has throughout the state. It is difficult to see how having easier access to alcohol would improve our community. It is most certainly not an economic development issue. I have been deeply involved in industrial recruitment for over 30 years here, and to attract new industry, you need to be ready. These companies are looking for a site, transportation, location, education/training, medical facilities, work force, lack of crime and overall quality of life. (we must be prepared.) Alcohol addresses none of these.

I would ask you to please refrain from signing the liquor petition. If the petitioners are successful in putting this on the ballot, I pray that you will vote against it.

Sincerely,
