Delta thumps Wolves

MOORHEAD – The Mississippi Delta Community College Trojansdefeated Copiah-Lincoln Community College 15-0 Thursday night atMoorhead in a game filled with first-game mistakes on both sides ofthe ball.

The game, played on a slightly soggy field, seemed to be onemistake after another from the first kickoff which the Co-LinWolves promptly fumbled to the Trojans on the 24 yard line. Fourplays and a penalty later the Trojans’ Todd McGee missed a 47 yardfield goal attempt.

The Wolves took over on their own 30 and immediately fumbled theball away again. Delta defensive back Richard Brown of Merigoldrecovered on the Co-Lin 25 and two plays later quarterback CaseyClark of Tutwiler hit wide receiver Anthony Brown of Hot Springs ona 17 yard TD strike. Todd McGee added the PAT and the Trojan held a7-0 led with 11:47 showing in the first half.

That was the way the scored stayed until near the end of thethird quarter when Delta’s tough defense chased the Wolves’quarterback from his own 20 into his end zone where he panicked andintentionally grounded the football on a desperation pass. Themistake gave the Trojans a safety and they led 9-0 with 3:36 leftin the third quarter.

Delta’s offense, which played good at times and poorly atothers, finally revved up in the fourth quarter and put on asustained drive that went 88 yards in 14 plays for the final scoreof the game with Casey Clark hitting slot back Aaron Nicholson ofMilton, FL. on a 14 yard pass play at the 9:48 mark. The PAT kickfailed.

The Trojans, with Clark at the helm, connected on 13 of 22passes for 150 yards and two TD ‘s while rushing 44 times for 113yards for a 263 yard game total. The Trojans, were led on theground by slot back Aaron Nicholson who rushed six times for 37yards and slot back Ebony Johnson of Pace who rushed 11 times for33 yards.

Nine different receivers got their hands on football Thursdaynight but wide receiver Torrence Hoye of Carey led the pack pullingin four passes for 39 yards while wide receiver Anthony Brownhauled in three passes for 43 yards and a TD.

But, it was the Trojans’ defense that really shone in the seasonopener for both teams. The defense collected eight sacks andrecovered three fumbles and one interception while keeping theWolves out of the end zone and off the scoreboard.

Three Trojans, defensive end Corvelli Haynes of Cleveland,defensive back Richard Brown of Merigold, and defensive linemanClaude Wroten of Bastrop, LA., each recorded two sacks and a fumblerecovery apiece.

Linebacker Lorenzo Fain of Panther Burn and defensive end JeromePerez of Greenwood also recorded a sack each and defenisve backMarcus Moore of Greenville grabbed an interception.

The wolves only managed to complete four of 10 passes for 66yards and rush 25 times for 68 yards. But, the eight sacks resultedin a minus eighty yards rushing, so Co-Lin came out of the gamewith only 54 yards of total offense.

Next Saturday the Trojans will travel to Laurel to take on theNo.1-ranked team in the South Division, Jones Junior College at 7p.m. Co-Lin is at Coahoma.
