Brook AL lands in 11s state tournament

SUMMIT — The Brookhaven American League11-year-old all-starsdefeated McComb 14-0 Tuesday night to capture the District Sixchampionship at the Windsor Gay Complex. McComb nipped Brookhaven8-7 in the first game that night.

Monday night, Brookhaven eliminated Summit 9-6 and beat them 9-5in Saturday action.

Brookhaven and McComb advance to the state tournament in Natchezbeginning Saturday, July 23.

“Our kids never give up,” said Brookhaven American coach MarkDurr. “They are willing to give it 110 percent. I am real proud ofthem. They played as a team. That is what made us click.”

Brookhaven 14, McComb 0

In the championship game Tuesday, McComb walked 11 Brookhavenbatters in the lopsided loss.

“McComb ran out of pitching in the championship game,” addedDurr. “They didn’t have much pitching. They pitched their ace inthe earlier game.”

The winning pitcher was Blake Fugler and the loser was JustinBrent.

Will Hickman and Anthony Durr drilled back-to-back doubles inthe first inning to give the Americans a 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, Brookhaven exploded for seven runs for a10-0 lead without knotching a hit.

Brookhaven added four runs in the bottom of the third. Sparkingthe Americans with a two-run double was Tyler Cooper.

Will Lacuira and Ethan Noland singled for McComb.

McComb 8, Brookhaven 7

In the first game Tuesday, Brookhaven pitcher Corey Funk walkedin the game-winning run as McComb posted an 8-7 win to force thesecond matchup.

The Americans tied the game 7-all in the top of the sixth on asingle by Leighton Jordan. Fugler’s RBI double scored Jordan.

McComb went ahead 7-6 in the fifth inning.

The Americans led McComb 2-0 in the first inning. Jeff Rushingdoubled to scored both runs.

McComb came back with three runs in the second inning for a 4-2advantage.

J.B. Perkins and Bradley Wall paced McComb with two hitsapiece.

Brookhaven 9, Summit 6

Summit committed seven errors in Monday’s loss.

Summit had scored five runs in the third inning to take a 6-4lead over Brookhaven.

Brookhaven exploded in the fourth inning for five runs to goahead of Summit 9-6. Igniting the rally was Jeff Rushing with adouble. Following with back-to-back singles were Leighton Jordanand Corey Funk. Summit also committed two errors in the inning.

Funk and Jordan led Brookhaven with two hits apiece. Singlingwere Logan Killingsworth, Jeremy Laird and Jacob Phillip.

‘Everybody is excited about going to state,” added Durr. “Wehope our fans will show up in full force. We hope to representBrookhaven well.”
