Brookhaven Academy teams reach Classic finals

Brookhaven Academy blasted Simpson County Academy Tuesday nightin the semifinals of BA’s Holiday Classic in John R. GrayGymnasium. The host Lady Cougars rolled to a 62-44 win and theCougars roared to an 80-33 triumph to land berths in Saturdaynight’s championship games.

In the other semifinals games yesterday, Delta Academy edged theCopiah Academy girls 51-49 and the Central Private boys dumpedDelta 42-33. Saturday’s girls title game starts at 7 p.m., followedby the boys at 8:15.

In Tuesday’s consolation games, the Central Private girls nippedMarvell (Ark.) 50-49 and the Copiah boys clipped Marvell 44-43.Saturday’s consolation girls games starts at 2 p.m. with PrentissChristian School going against Central Private, followed by Simpsonvs. Copiah at 4:30. The boys consolation games have Copiah playingPrentiss Christian at 3:15 and Simpson facing Delta at 5:45.

The BA Lady Cougars (20-0) remained undefeated as guard KelliByrd paced the victory with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists.Mallory Logan added 14 points and Jessie Altman 10. Lauren Smithhad 4 assists as Brookhaven rolled to a 33-16 halftime lead.

“We were focused on our task,” said BA girls coach Barry Gray.”Our vision on the court was a lot better and we made some goodpasses.”

Simpson was led by Adriane Lee’s 22 points.

The Cougars (15-2) wrecked Simpson County Academy as Cole Hodgesled 5 players in double figures with 15 points. Jeremy Winborneadded 11 points, Alan Gray 12 and Seth Davis and Alex Davis 10apiece.

On the backboards, the Davis’ each had 6 rebounds. Hodges made10 assists and 3 steals.

“Our defense played well,” said BA boys coach Dale Watts. “I waspleased with our improvement in balanced scoring.”

Simpson fell behind 49-15 at halftime. The losers were led byNest Stephens with 10 points.

Delta 51, Copiah 49

Delta scored 20 fourth-quarter points to rally past Copiah. TheLady Raiders (21-1) were led by Lindsay Roy and Graham Carson with15 points each. Sarah Grace Long added 11 points.

Copiah (17-5) led 33-31 starting the fourth quarter. The LadyColonels got 14 points from Jackie Stowe, 12 from Tracey Williamsonand 10 from Carley Clayton.

Central Private 42, Delta 33

Thirteen points by Kirk Perkins and 11 by Travis McGraw directedCentral Private’s win over the Delta boys.

Delta got 10 points from Lee Thompson and 9 from TySinquifield.

Copiah 44, Marvell 43

Directing Copiah’s victory were Phil Walker with 14 points andMitchell Melaskell with 10. Shelby Ford added 9 points.

Marvell’s Eagles were led by Blake Tigon’s 14 points. DarronHardesy added 13 points.

Central Private 50, Marvell 49

Twenty points by Samantha Kirkwood carried Central Private pastMarvell’s Lady Eagles. Sonni Kirkwood added 14 pints and CandacePocorello 11.

Marvell got 18 points from Meagan Young and 14 from SaraSchaffhauser.
