BOGUE CHITTO – A Bogue Chitto man was killed in a collision witha log truck Friday morning on Highway 51 at the intersection ofSpringfield Trail, authorities said.

Fred B. Morris, 73, of 0401 Stoneybrook Trl., died in the crashthat happened around 9:30 a.m.

“He was pronounced dead at 9:50 a.m. at the scene,” said LincolnCounty Coroner-Medical Examiner Clay McMorris.

Morris, driving a southbound 1992 Ford Tempo, was attempting tocross the northbound lane when it was struck by a 1985 Mac logtruck, said Staff Sgt. Rod Crawford, public affairs officer forMississippi Highway Patrol District Nine.

The log truck was driven by Monica Kim Bales, 31, of BogueChitto. Bales was taken to King’s Daughters Medical Center fortreatment of non life-threatening injuries, Crawford said.

Crawford said Morris was not wearing a seat belt and failed toyield the right of way. Bogue Chitto volunteer firefightersresponded to the accident and the Brookhaven Fire Department’s Jawsof Life were needed to free Morris from the vehicle.

The log truck’s load spilled across the highway and the road wasblocked while emergency services personnel worked the accident.Crawford said a private operator with a skidder removed the logsfrom the road.

Graveside services for Morris, under the direction of CommunityFuneral Services, are 3 p.m., Sunday at Easthaven Baptist ChurchCemetery. Visitation is Sunday from 1-2:30 p.m., at the funeralhome.

In another holiday weekend fatality, James Pevey, 74, ofMonticello, was killed in a one-vehicle accident around 7:49 a.m.Friday on Highway 28.

MHP authorities told The Clarion-Ledger that Pevey’s1997 Nissan truck ran off the road and flipped several times.Pevey, who was thrown from the vehicle, was pronounced dead at thescene.
